Zvonko Vukovich
May 22, 1935 – April 30, 2025
Zvonko Vukovich passed away peacefully at home in New Berlin, Wisconsin, on April 30, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. He was 89 years old and faced complications related to dementia with grace and courage.
Zvonko was born on May 22, 1935, in Ðulovac, Yugoslavia, in the home of his aunt, a midwife who helped bring him into the world. He was raised in the nearby village of Vrjeska, where he enjoyed a simple and active childhood, often walking between neighboring villages to visit his cousins. He was the eldest son of Josip and Elizabeta (Hofman) Vukovic. At the age of 14, Zvonko left home to attend trade school in Darovar, where he studied to become a machine operator—a trade chosen by his father and perfectly suited to Zvonko’s natural mechanical aptitude. Balancing four hours of school with eight hours of daily work, he earned his diploma and began working in Darovar before being called to serve in the Army at age 20.
During his military service, Zvonko became a skilled driver, serving as a transporter and chauffeur. After completing his service, he moved to Virovitica, where he trained to repair locomotives and eventually became an operator of both steam and diesel trains. He often spoke fondly of this time in his life—rich with adventure, problem solving, and a deep appreciation for the people and landscapes he encountered.
It was in Virovitica that Zvonko met the love of his life, Danica. They were married for over 64 years, building a life filled with love, dedication, and family. Zvonko was a devoted husband and father, known for his strong work ethic, quiet strength, and love for all people.
In 1972, Zvonko, along with Danica and their 10-year-old daughter, immigrated to the United States in search of a better life. It was his courage, perseverance, and determination that laid the foundation for the life they built in their new home. Zvonko was always deeply grateful to the family in Montana and Wisconsin who offered support in those early years.
In the U.S., Zvonko worked at Falk Corporation and later at Quad/Graphics, where he served as a master mechanic and mentored many apprentices. Among family and friends, he was known as someone who could build or fix anything—and who approached every new project with confidence and creativity.
Zvonko is survived by his beloved wife, Danica (Gajski) Vukovich, of New Berlin, WI; his daughter Jasna and son-in-law Mark Frontz of Lac Du Flambeau, WI; and many nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Josip and Elizabeta Vukovic; his brother, Vlado Vukovic; and his grandparents.
Zvonko will be remembered for his generosity, resilience, storytelling, and unwavering love for his family. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched and the values he passed down.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, from 12:00 PM – 3:00 PM at Krause Funeral Home, 12401 West National Avenue, New Berlin, Wisconsin. Service to follow at 3:00 PM.
