Passed away and is reunited with his wife of 71 years, Joan Joy (nee Williams) on Friday, October 20, 2023, age 93. Loving father of Joy (the late Michael) Dowd, Jeff (Mary Kay) Hirschinger and Jill Hirschinger. Grandfather of Jerin (Nikki) and Jace (Alana) Dowd. Great- grandfather to Logan and Bailey Dowd.
Bud began is financial career as a cashier at the Milwaukee County bank and received Certificates from the American Institute Of Banking and the American Accountants Training Assoc. He was a bank officer when he left to serve as the West Allis City Treasurer, 1964-1990. Founded and President of the National Association of Municipal Treasurers for the United States and Canada.
Bud was very active in the West Allis community; organized and was chairman of the first West Allis Christmas parade, the Christmas shopping tour for deserving children, West Allis Western Days, West Allis Charities, West Allis Players and the West Allis Chamber of Commerce. He was a National Director and president of the Jaycee organization (Junior Chamber of Commerce) and received their Wisconsin Outstanding Young Man of the Year award, was a member of the Jaycee clown squad that participated in parades including the Ringling Brothers Circus parade in downtown Milwaukee.
Other memberships include the Rotary club, Monogram club, the Masonic Lodge, served as President of the West Allis Jaycee’s, West Allis Civic Alliance, Kiwanis Club, Jefferson School PTA and West Allis Civic Theater. He was treasurer of First Lutheran Church, West Allis Market Commission and Star Charities.
He was honored in Washington DC as one of the five outstanding municipal treasurers in the country.
He served in the US Air Force.
Shortly after his retirement he noticed West Allis was hosting the World Speeding Skating Championships right before the Olympics. He researched and discovered the City was not involved. He began to organize a welcome party for all the teams. It was held at the Mitchell Domes with a country western band, food, beer and gift bag. Upon his retirement Bud and Joan enjoyed their summer life on Pewaukee Lake boating, sailing, hosting the family and telling stories around the camp fire. He favorite that he made up was “Beep Beep the Monkey” and the “Pewaukee Lake Monster.” He organized inflatable canoe races with the grand kids and other games. During the winters they found their happy place at Six Lakes Country Club in North Fort Myers, FL. He helped organize and grow the Six Lakes Happy Hour and had the Happy Hour Show Band. He was known for playing his “banger”, harmonica, kazoo, washboard and trombone. He served on the board of directors and was involved in many activities.
Dad will be remembered for his love of family, love of life and the love of his community.
Visitation will be held at Krause Funeral Home, 12401 West National Avenue, New Berlin, Wisconsin on Friday, October 27, 2023, 10:00 AM – 11:45 AM. Funeral Service at 12:00 PM. Burial will be held privately.
