Dr. Thomas Anton Hofbauer passed away peacefully on June 17, 2026, at the age of 93.

Tom was born on September 28, 1932, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to Charles and Alice Hofbauer. He was raised in Milwaukee, where he graduated from Rufus King High School at the age of 17. He then pursued his undergraduate studies in pre-medicine at Marquette University before attending Marquette University Medical School, now known as the Medical College of Wisconsin.

In 1956, Tom married Claudia Billig. Shortly thereafter, they relocated to Aurora, Colorado, where he served as a captain in the United States Army at Fitzsimons Army Hospital. Following his military service, he completed his internship and residency training in obstetrics and gynecology.

Tom and Claudia later returned to Wisconsin and settled in Menomonee Falls, where they raised two children, Diane and Michael. There, Dr. Hofbauer became one of the founding members of Medical Associates Health Center, an independent clinic providing primary care, internal medicine, pediatrics, general surgery, obstetrics and gynecology. Medical Associates grew into a large multi-specialty medical practice with several offices throughout Waukesha County. Medical Associates was integral to the establishment and building of Community Memorial Hospital, which opened in 1964.

Through more than 40 years of practice, Dr. Hofbauer supported women through all stages of reproductive health, from routine gynecological care to pregnancy and childbirth. He delivered thousands of babies and had the unique privilege of caring for multiple generations within many families. His experience encompassed comprehensive women’s health services, providing patients with the benefit of decades of clinical knowledge and expertise. His long-standing commitment to women’s healthcare reflected not only his medical skill, but also his dedication to caring for patients through both routine and complex obstetric and gynecological needs. Dr. Hofbauer served for ten years as a member of the Board of Directors of the Wisconsin State Medical Society and as President of both the Wisconsin Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the Milwaukee Gynecological Society.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Tom was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He was known for his intelligence, steady presence, warm sense of humor, work ethic, and strong commitment to those he loved.

In 1999, Tom married Sandra Key. After retirement, he was eager to embrace life’s next chapter. He cherished spending time with family, traveling throughout Europe with Sandy, spending winters in Florida, playing poker and Yahtzee, and enjoying rounds of golf with friends. He was an avid fan of Marquette basketball, Notre Dame football and the Green Bay Packers. Whether exploring new places or gathering around the card table, Tom found his greatest joy in the people he loved and the memories they created together.

Dr. Hofbauer was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Charles, his sister Janice Tews, and ex-wife Claudia.

Tom is survived by his beloved wife, Sandra, his loving children, Diane (Seth) Davidson, and Michael (Patrice) Hofbauer. He is also survived by stepchildren, Ann (David) Biese, Michael (Ann) Key, and Darin (Jamie) Key. Tom was a proud grandfather who cherished time spent with his grandchildren. He treasured watching them grow, celebrating their accomplishments, and creating lasting memories together. He will be remembered and missed by grandchildren, Ava and Elena Hofbauer, Lauren and Alec Biese, Catherine Key, Payton Key and great-grandson, Maddox.

Tom’s legacy lives on through the countless lives he touched as a physician, mentor, husband, father, and grandfather. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him.

Visitation will be held on Monday, June 29, 2026, from 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM. Service at 6:00 PM at Krause Funeral Home, 21600 West Capitol Drive, Brookfield, Wisconsin.

Mike and family, I am very sorry for the passing of your dad and grandpa. His memories will carry forward with you and your family. We wish you peace and comfort during this difficult time.

I first met Tom in 1979 when I joined Medical Associates. He was a mentor who helped me hone my skills as an obstetrician/gynecologist. We assisted each other in surgery and with difficult deliveries. We also played poker with the same group for nearly 40 years. He always did better than I did. Tom never mentioned his health unless asked and then always with a smile and humorous comment. He will be missed.

Dear Sandy, my heartfelt condolences on Tom's passing; may his memory inspire strength and hope during this challenging time. My mother, currently hospitalized, sends her prayers and well-wishes.
