This is an excerpt from a book I have written for my family, in a chapter titled "Who had the most positive influence on my life". Mr. Terry Herder, a circulation district sales manager for the Milwaukee Journal newspaper, mentored groups of his 12-year-old newspaper carriers by taking us downtown to the Milwaukee Journal headquarters on 4th and State Street in his Journal truck on Saturday mornings. He showed us the presses and how the paper was produced. We toured the marketing, circulation, advertising, and other departments. He bought us lunch at the Journal cafeteria as we enjoyed a commanding skyline view of Milwaukee. Until I was twelve years old I never left the forty by forty square block area of Milwaukee's Southside where I grew up. So going downtown was a big adventure for me. We traveled with Terry and ran newspapers into drug stores, supermarkets, and other shops after lunch. Then we watched Terry toss a paper out the window to the bridge tender on the 6th Street viaduct. If he missed and it went into the river He had to go around again! Then back to the Journal loading dock to await our turn to load 3000 newspapers in his truck and deliver them to our distribution station S-6. Mr Herder was tranferred to Wauwatosa. He returned to our district, picked me up, and took me on his new run in his new district. He showed me suburban neighborhoods I had never seen before. I was amazed by the large homes and beautiful communities. Mr. Herder also took us to play golf. He opened my world and showed me there was much more out there to learn and explore. Terry did this for me and many of the other carriers. I will always remember the kindness, generosity, and example he shared with a bunch of kids. He had a tremendous impact on my life. God will certainly Bless Terry Herder! I am ill and unable to attend Terry's service. I wish I could be there to share this story personally. Please accept my sincerest deepest sympathy for your loss. Paul Serdynski

If it were not for Dad's patience and cheat sheet I would have never learned to play Sheepshead. I am grateful for him taking the time to teach me as it is a game I enjoy playing with family and friends. I have many great memories of playing cards at Sandy Point. Laughing and joking around was always a part of it. Love you, Jul
