Richard (Dick) Charles Joseph Cushing, born October 16, 1937, died Monday, March 31, 2025, and now resides in the presence of our Lord, Jesus Christ.
Dick grew up in West Allis as an only child. After meeting on a blind date, he married Karen Sue Spoerk, on August 5th, 1961. They were happily married for 63 years. Together, they had three sons, Doug, Tim and Brett. For thirty-years, Dick served as a West Allis police officer, reaching the rank of Detective Lieutenant and as a homicide detective. During his tenure with the police department, he lead the Officer Friendly Program, interrogated Jeffrey Dahmer and solved numerous homicides.
Upon retirement, he worked as an Investigator for Hausmann-McNally Law Firm and for District Attorney Michael McCann. He left this life, deeply cherishing his family and concluding, “I am the richest man on earth.” His friends and family are richer because of him.
Dick studied law at Marquette University, enjoyed lecturing at St. Matthias and serving at Apostle Presbyterian Church. He was both a Packers fan and a local weather aficionado. Mostly, Dick enjoyed “breaking bread together” with family and friends where deep discussions, the reveling in memories and laughing together were guaranteed. He was both wise and had a calming effect upon people. Dick left an indelible mark on everyone he met and will be missed by all who knew him.
Dick is survived by his wife, Karen, sons/daughter’s-in-law, Doug (Sharon), Tim (Rachel), Brett (Laura), grandchildren, Kaleb (wife Amber), Seth, Zac (wife Kasie) Angie (husband David) and Drew, as well as five great-grandchildren, Lenora, Henry, Loretta, Malakai and Baby M.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, April 5, 2025 at 11:00 AM at St. Matthias Catholic Church, 9306 West Beloit Road, Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
