Mitchell Nicholas Maragos
Mitchell “Mitch” Maragos passed away on June 3, 2026, at the age of 94 in Stoughton, Wisconsin. Born in Waukesha, Wisconsin, he was the youngest son of Nicholas and Marika (Kaldrimedes) Maragos and brother to four siblings: Ernest (and Mary) Maragos, Thomas (and Sophie) Maragos, Peter (and Pauline) Maragos, and Joy (and Ralph) Humrickhouse. He was predeceased by his wife of 69 years Betty Lou (Hess) Maragos, daughter Phyllis Maragos, daughter Marie Claire Maragos, and an infant son. Mitchell is survived by one son, Chris, and his wife, Johnna Maragos of Stoughton, WI and by three grandchildren and their spouses: Carl and Abigail Maragos, Helen Maragos, and Tom and Madison Maragos. He is also survived by many caring and loving people including his nieces and nephews, in particular Dena Giallanza, and Joe and Paul Bourgeau. He was also blessed to have received love and support from Patti O’Brien and Dennis Driscoll.
Mitchell grew up in Waukesha, Wisconsin. His first job, at a young age, was at his father’s barbershop, sweeping and straightening up. In high school he worked part-time refinishing woodwork for a local company. After graduating from Waukesha High school, he attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he met Betty. They married in 1953 and lived for many years in Milwaukee and then Wauwatosa, Wisconsin. An eye for detail and a special talent for drawing objects led him to a career as a draftsman. He worked for several companies, with his favorite employer being General Electric Medical Systems, from which he retired in 1993. When he started as a draftsman, mechanical drawings were done to scale by hand. By the end of his career, he was using the first computer systems for drafting and designing. He embraced this challenge and, as a result, had a level of technological savvy unusual for his generation.
Mitchell and Betty spent their retired years in Lakeland, Florida and, later, at Brandon Wood Retirement Center in Morton, Illinois. In his free time Mitch enjoyed fishing, model aviation, metal detecting, photography, bowling, and traveling to Elderhostels with Betty. He was particularly proud of his bowling, continuing to do so until age 92. He was a Christian, of the Greek Orthodox faith. His final residence was at Skaalen Heritage Center, Stoughton, WI.
Visitation will be held at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, on June 15, 2026, at 12:00 PM, followed by a funeral service led by Father Ciprian Sas at 12:30 PM. Mitchell will be interred at Pine Lawn Memorial Park, 10700 Capital Drive, Milwaukee beside his beloved Betty, Phyllis, and infant children.
