Marlene Kay Zabel (formerly Knippelmeyer) passed away on November 11, 2025, in Germantown, Wisconsin, at the age of 81. Born on January 10, 1944, and raised in Johnson, Nebraska, Marlene’s life was marked by a spirit of adventure, creativity, and deep familial bonds.
She spent her early years in Nebraska, where she was raised alongside her siblings by her parents, Walter and Maxine Zabel. In 1979, Marlene and her family relocated to Waukesha, Wisconsin, where she would build a fulfilling life both personally and professionally.
Marlene enjoyed a successful career as a travel agent. Her work not only allowed her to help others explore the world but also gave her the opportunity to experience many corners of it herself. Her passion for travel was only surpassed by her love of music—she was a proud member of Sweet Adelines for over 50 years. From the Lincolnaires, to the Badger Belles, to Crosstown Harmony, she was a key member of each organization, contributing both her time and singing talent. Her dedication to harmony and performance brought joy to countless audiences and enriched her own life with lasting friendships and cherished memories.
In addition to music and travel, Marlene found great joy in sewing and in the kitchen. She was known for her cooking skills and especially for baking cookies that became family favorites across generations.
Marlene’s legacy lives on through her loving family: daughter and son-in-law Kristin and Karl Kruska; son David Knippelmeyer; sister Karen Ronnfeldt; brother Harold Zabel; and her beloved grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her sisters Shirley Franzen and Edna Dennis; brother Wiley Zabel; and parents Walter and Maxine Zabel.
May her memory bring comfort to those who knew and loved her.
