Leona Mae (Mace) Bergren, 88, previously of Ames, Iowa, passed away September 8, 2024, in Brookfield, WI.
Lee was a friend to all, a caring nurse, a devoted wife, a loving mother, and her favorite role in life was… “Grammy.” Lee was born May 8, 1936, to Jesse Otto Mace & Fairie May (Mason) Mace in rural Roby, MO. She grew up on the family farm. She graduated from Plato High School in 1954 and went on to attend St. John’s School of Nursing in Springfield, MO where she graduated and became a Registered Nurse. Lee met her soulmate, Jerry, at an Army dance in Ft. Leonard Wood, MO. They were married on February 28, 1960, in Elliott, IA, and were blessed with three children, Brad, DeeAnn and Darcy. They started their family while living in Atlantic, IA, later moving to Cedar Falls, and lastly, called Ames their home.
Lee and Jerry were lifelong members of Collegiate United Methodist Church in Ames. They both enjoyed golf, and the Iowa State Cyclones. Most of all, they enjoyed being with their children and grandchildren. Lee worked most of her nursing career at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. She had a true passion for helping and taking care of people and continued serving MGMC as a volunteer after retirement.
Leona is survived by her son, Brad, and his wife, Sherri, of Brookfield, WI, her daughter, DeeAnn of Lutz, FL, grandson, Joey, of North Hollywood, CA, and granddaughter, Coley, of Minneapolis, MN. She is also survived by two brothers, Leon Mace, of Roby, MO., and Nolan Mace, of Houston, MO. Also, several nieces, nephews, cousins, and in-laws. Leona was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Jerry, her sister Charlcie Royster of Yukon, OK., daughter, Darcy Joan Bergren, and granddaughter, Darcy Lee Bergren.
