I have many memories of Kaaren. But one of the best is that I remember being with her in a piano store looking for pianos for my daughter. I knew that Kaaren could play piano but I had no idea just how well she could play. That day, she sat down at a Grand piano and I found out. She started to play a song I later found out was titled Malaguena. She owned that piano. It was amazing to watch her as she played. She played with power and confidence. I don't think she even noticed people were gathering as she played. When she finished, everyone clapped and I stood there with my mouth open! Kaaren liked Winter more than I did. Too me, it was the worst. She told me how she loved it when the snow would cover everything like a new blanket. She loved the fact that everything was fresh and clean. She also loved it when it was so cold that everyone was home and content to curl up under a blanket and just watch TV together. Kaaren told me to find relaxation in the Winter months and to try to see the Season in a more positive way. Kaaren had a solid faith. She made sure her children were brought up in a Christian home and also continued their education in Christian grade school and high school. That faith is also with her grandchildren. As we're about about to celebrate Thanksgiving I remember a Thanksgiving where Kaaren, Curtis and Bryan came to Phoenix to visit. It was my first Thanksgiving away from Milwaukee and family. Kaaren and I were about to cook our first turkey. We were pretty proud of ourselves when we took the bird out of the oven. That is, until we found the bag with the giblets still tucked inside the bird. We weren't sure if we should go ahead and eat the turkey or just be content with side dishes. Doug, Curtis and Bryan decided for us. We ate the turkey. As we approach this Thanksgiving, there will be one empty seat at the Smale table. As I think about the family and their loss, I think about a picture Kaaren had hanging in the dining room of her home where I attended many Thanksgivings. It was a picture of a table that looked like it was going into infinity. When I asked her about the picture, she told me she thought that's what a table would look like in Heaven. She said the tables would always be set for us. We wouldn't have to worry about anything. John 14:2 states "In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you." The table is set for you Kaaren and you don't have to do a thing. Jesus did it all.

Curtis and family, I am so sorry for your loss. Knowing the kind of man Curtis is and reading about his memories have given me a wonderful insight to the kind of person Kaaren was. What a Blessing! Please take the time to write down those cherished memories you have of her. They will be a great comfort to you in the coming years. God's Blessings upon your family.

I remember my Mom taking us to church, St. Luke’s and St. Paul’s, and Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. I remember going to the movies in the theater, which were very magical experiences for me, I treasured them while they were happening, and I treasure them now; and good restaurant meals; the first day of school on the Mendenhall’s front porch. I also remember her sense of humor; her Sloppy Joes and pork chop dinners; and the birthday parties in the Oakwood Street house. That’s what I remember my Mom for. Those were the first things that come to mind when I think of my Mom. God bless my Mom. One of the things that I think about quite often are the stories of when she and a friend went out to Hollywood and met Scott Brady, Telly Savalas, and Leslie Nielsen and hung around with them for a few days. I would love to see those photos again. I can say that two out of three of those actors mean quite a lot to me. Leslie Nielsen will live forever in my heart because he was the captain of the ship in one of the first movies I ever saw at the Southtown Cinemas, one of the most meaningful movies to me, THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE. And Telly Savalas was known for asking one of the most important questions anyone can ask in life: “Who loves ya baby?” Jesus bless my Mom. Thank you for all the good things you did for me in life, Mom. Your son, Curtis John 6:47
