Patrick J Gibbs left a message on April 7, 2024:
Joe and I were together at Notre Dame on the yearbook staff in 1969-72 as photographers. The fact that he spent so much time on his photography and successfully completed a pre-med major demonstrated how brilliant he was. His death at such a young age is a great loss. Back then we joked about what we would think of the Dome yearbook 50 years later.

JJC saw a potential in me before I understood that I had lost myself. I am proud to still practice his professional mentoring philosophies that have guided my success- and self love.

On behalf of all of us at Catholic Relief Services who knew Joe and his passion for helping those less fortunate, and on behalf of the many thousands of our most vulnerable brothers and sisters around the world whose lives were improved thanks to his and Kathy's dedication and generosity, we send our deepest condolences to the whole family. Kathy, our thoughts and prayers are especially with you in these days. May Joe's example of helping others live on in all of us who knew him and in those who never knew him but benefitted from his compassion.

I've known Joe for 25+ years, when I first met him as a Flight instructor and he was a Student Pilot at Waukesha Flying Services. It was not until the past few years or so that we re-connected, when he allowed me to go flying with him in his prized, one of a kind Beech Duchess to locations around the midwest to get the 1000 dollar hamburger, aviate and share our mutual love of aviation, and all things mechanical: Airplanes, Cars and other machines. A brilliant physician, pilot and friend. Most of all,he was very generous and giving of his time and talents, and I will always be grateful that we got to hang out together. Godspeed Joe, until we meet again.
Peace of mind is a call away. We’re here when you need us most.

I've known Joe since he was 16 and it is hard to imagine a world without him. What a brilliant man, physician, diagnostician, aviator, businessman and family man! My condolences to Kath, Mori, Pat, Dan, Jaxson, Amy, Nicole and Pierce on the loss of a husband, brother, dad and uncle. My memories of Joe are varied: Mori and I visiting him at Notre Dame and watching Joe Theisman lead the Fighting Irish to a win, meeting an incredibly precocious baby Pat in the Annapolis house to roaring games of Trivial Pursuit. I want to thank Joe especially for encouraging Charlie and myself to continue to seek third and fourth opinions for our sick child. Even from a distance, Joe's skill as a diagnostician saved my son. Kathy, Pat, Dan, Jaxson and Mori: May the memories of Joe, his brilliant mind, giving spirit and humor comfort you. He was so proud of his children; Pat’s new book and all the TV productions of Dan. Kathy, (her clown name, “Noodles”) gave him so much joy. I was so fortunate to get to share and talk to Joe almost every day, for the last twenty years. Joe had so many interests; as anyone who visited his hangar, that Joe referred to as “Muppet Labs”, knew. His love of all thing’s aviation was one hobby he appeared to enjoy the most. In every conversation it seems we had a good laugh, or two, and I would usually learn something new from him. Everyone at the Waukesha airport enjoyed Joe’s vast range of knowledge and friendship. Joe was only 16 when he started college at Notre Dame. Truly one in a million. God called him home much sooner than we wished, but we are thankful for the time he shared Joe with us. Until we meet again Joe, may you only have sunshine and tailwinds. Paul and Lisa Walter
