It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of James John Simonson, who departed from this world on June 25, 2024, at the age of 85. He passed away peacefully at the home he built with love for his family 51 years ago.
James, affectionately known as Jim, was born on March 13, 1939, in Milwaukee to Alfred and Olive Simonson (nee Healy). His early life in Milwaukee shaped his resilient character, evident from a young age when he contributed his earnings to support his family. Jim held various jobs during his life, including newspaper and milk delivery, National T grocery store, and hospital security, to name a few. He proudly served in the U.S. Army as a Military Police Officer and later as a Chaplain’s Assistant, where his musical talent shone through his organ playing. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Sergeant (E5).
After his military service, Jim met and married his beloved wife Nancy. He dedicated 31 years of his life as a Police/Court Officer for the City of New Berlin, where he earned admiration for his commitment to justice and service to the community. Jim was deeply involved in civic life as a longstanding member of the New Berlin Lion’s Club and the Holy Name Society.
Jim’s life was a testament to his faith and generosity. He was known for his readiness to help family and neighbors and had a passion for working on his 1966 Ambassador Rambler and tinkering in his workshop. His love for music was evident in his enjoyment of listening to records on his stereo and playing piano.
Jim is survived by his devoted wife of 53 years, Nancy J. Simonson (nee Pronschinske), and his five children: Carolyn (Robert) Loohauis, Rebecca (Jerrold) Schultz, Daniel Simonson, Tamara Simonson, and Laura Simonson. He was a proud grandfather to nine grandchildren: Emily (Daniel) Sikora, Mikayla Loohauis, Lindsay Loohauis, Colin Loohauis, Samantha (Russ) Toman, Matthew Schultz, Meghan Schultz, Sophia Simonson, and Jonah Simonson. He is also survived by his brother, George (Katie) Simonson, and sister, Patricia Grutza. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred and Olive Simonson, his brother Alfred Simonson, brother-in-law Phil Grutza, and daughter-in-law Karen Simonson (nee John).
Jim’s life touched many, and his memory will forever be cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His legacy of faith, kindness, and love will continue to inspire generations to come.
