It is with profound sadness that we mourn the passing of J. Michael “Mike” Mooney, beloved husband, father, grandfather, friend, mentor and one of Wisconsin’s most respected business leaders.
Mike was born on August 22nd, 1942, in the City of Milwaukee to Hubert “Red” and Elizabeth “Betty” Mooney (nee O’Connell). He was raised in a large, loving Irish family in Wauwatosa with 5 siblings Kathleen LaBelle (the late James), Patricia (Gary) Moldenhauer, (the late) Daniel Mooney, Mary Jo Mooney (Robert Nitsch) and Laurie Jolly (Michael) Killey.
To many, Mike was known as the co-founder of MLG Capital and a visionary in commercial real estate. Through the decades of professional success and community leadership, Mike remained grounded by the people he loved, the friendships he nurtured and the values that guided his life. He was a devoted family man. Mike married Marilyn Ann Mooney (nee Merklein) on his birthday in 1980 so he would never forget his anniversary. The marriage was a package deal it came with two instant children, Diana (David) Wheelock and David Mooney. He became the grandfather of Jack, Aidan, (the late) Claire and Sophia. He valued and cherished these relationships.
Mike possessed a remarkable gift for making people feel important and it naturally extended to his roles as a husband, father, grandfather, and patriarch. Family and friends knew him as someone who was always available to give guidance, encouragement, humor and unwavering support. He celebrated their successes as if they were his own and provided strength and perspective whenever it was needed. His legacy is not simply the businesses he helped build, but the values he passed on the future generations – integrity, resilience, generosity, hard work and an appreciation for the opportunities life provides.
Mike’s story was one of perseverance, integrity and character. He built a remarkable career spanning more than 5 decades in commercial real estate and economic development. In 1980 he founded Mooney & Associates. Then in 1987, he co-founded Mooney LeSage & Associates, which ultimately evolved into MLG Capital, one of the nation’s leading private real estate investment firms. Mike and his valued partners have grown the company from a local brokerage and development venture into a nationally recognized company that invests billions of dollars in commercial real estate while creating opportunities for investors, communities, business partners and employees.
His impact extended far beyond MLG. He was a passionate advocate for economic development throughout the state and served in numerous leadership positions that helped shape Wisconsin’s business landscape. He co-founded NAIOP Wisconsin, served on the boards of Wisconsin Realtors Association and the Wisconsin Economic Development Association, and played a key role in the formation of the Waukesha County Business Alliance. He participated in the leadership of the national commercial real estate organization, NAI for many years. His contributions were recognized through numerous honors and awards, including Realtor of the Year, the NAIOP J. Michael Mooney Award and the prestigious Frederick C. Pearce Award for his extraordinary contributions to economic development.
These accomplishments only tell part of the story.
Mike believed deeply in relationships. Colleagues, investors, clients and community leaders often became lifelong friends. He possessed a rare ability to make people feel welcome, valued and heard. He generously shared his wisdom, encouraged young professionals and celebrated the success of others with genuine enthusiasm. He became a trusted friend and mentor to many.
People often remarked on Mike’s optimism, his warmth and is unmistakable sense of humor. Whether hosting an investor gathering, supporting charitable causes or spending time with friends and family, Mike brought energy, authenticity and kindness to every interaction. He believed that business success and community impact should go hand in hand, embodying the principle of “making a difference while making a living.”
Above all, Mike valued people. He cherished family celebrations, treasured friendships and took pride in the many lives he touched through his leadership and generosity of spirit. His legacy is reflected not only in the company he helped build, but in the countless relationships he cultivated and the example he set for future generations. Mike leaves a lasting legacy of integrity, entrepreneurial spirit, friendship and service. His influence will continue to be felt in the communities he helped strengthen, the organizations he helped create and the many individuals who are fortunate enough to call him a friend.
