Grant passed away unexpectedly, and surrounded by loved ones, on February 10, 2024, at age 59. He was the beloved husband to Kimberly Wittberger (Nee Moy) and devoted son to Mavis Wittberger (Nee McKay). Caring brother to Alicia Wittberger (Jeffery Jacobs), Riki (Tom) Spahn, and Darcy Wittberger (Taymoor Sardar). He loved being an uncle to Sadie, Chloe, Finnian, and Kaveh, and was the best fur-dad to his dogs Quinnie, Claire, Chloe, and Katie, and cats Feather, Bella, Bree, and Emma.
Grant is proceeded in death by his father Granton Wittberger.
Grant was a gentle soul who was curious and lived life with integrity and creativity. He was a lifelong learner, who was always working on a project. As a young child, he could be found taking things apart (to learn how they worked) and then putting them back together. Or he was on the hunt for the perfect “part” to finish his project or next invention.
He was often the smartest person in the room, and his humble and quiet demeanor sometimes kept that a secret. As an adult, Grant worked as an industrial engineer. He found joy in learning. He earned an undergraduate degree from the University of Wisconsin – Stout in the 1980s, and later in life a master’s degree, both in the field of engineering. In his final months, he was doing some “light reading,” tackling a hard copy book on the electric car engine, because “that was the future,” and he wanted to be sure he was in the know.
You were lucky if you witnessed his dry and modest sense of humor. Or his belly laugh – when he laughed, he laughed with his whole being, and used his subtle wit to connect with people.
Grant loved his family. He was a loyal and devoted husband to Kimberly, a dedicated son to his mom, and a protective brother to his three sisters. He showed his love through sending cards. Whether it was on a birthday, holiday, or celebration, Grant sent a card for every occasion. He enjoyed time with family, especially summer BBQs and pool parties in the backyard of his childhood home in Brookfield, WI, the city where he spent his elementary and high school years.
On November 10, 1990, Grant married his honey, soulmate, and boo, Kimberly. The couple built a house they called home for nearly 30 years in Cedar Grove, WI, and were part of a tight community. Throughout marriage, they appreciated travel and visited Nassau, Bahamas, Puerto Rico, St. Thomas, St. Johns, Cancun, Cozumel, Grand Cayman Island, Toronto, Canada, Virginia Beach, Washington DC, and Orlando, FL. They loved living near the shores of Lake Michigan, where they both found solace and calm surrounded by the sound of waves and fresh air. The beach was their place to spend time for celebrations, special occasions, or just everyday life, together, while their dogs ran free.
In his final days, Grant was at peace and surrounded by his loved ones. A special thank you from Grant’s family to the first responders from Ozaukee and Sheboygan Counties in Wisconsin; the nurses, doctors, and staff at Aurora Medical Center in Grafton, WI; and all the angels who made sure Grant was resting comfortably in his final days – lifelong appreciation and gratitude – you all make the world better.
A celebration of Grant’s life and legacy will take place with family and friends in March.
