Grace Mary Gunnlaugsson (nee Brens), 79, passed away peacefully at her home in Chenequa, WI on November 13, 2023. She was born on September 4, 1944, in Chicago, IL, to the late John and Dorothy Brens.
Grace was a devoted wife to her beloved husband of 57 years, Gordy, and a loving mother to her children, Peter (Debbie) and Kristin (Matt). She took great joy in being a grandmother to Maggie, Katie, Audrey, and Emily. Grace also leaves behind her brothers, Charlie and George. She was preceded in death by her brother, Jack.
Grace attended St. Charles High School in St. Charles, IL, and graduated with honors from UW Madison with a degree in education majoring in Latin and English. She met Gordy during her freshman year and they began their lives together studying, working at Carson Gulley cafeteria, and finding time for fun whether taking a walk to Picnic Point or catching the free Friday movies at B10 Commerce. In addition to being a great mom and wife, she found time to volunteer, work as a substitute teacher, start a business, and keep her busy family organized and on schedule.
Grace enjoyed talking with people and brought cheerful energy to her many interests and activities, whether visiting with her childhood friends the “Foxy Saints,” keeping fit with the friends she made through pilates, discussions with her book group, volunteering at church, growing in faith with her long-term Bible study group, or just getting together with friends for dinner.
Grace was an active member of Calvary Lutheran Church, where she found solace and community. Those wishing to make a donation in Grace’s memory may consider two special interests of Grace’s, Birch Creek Music Performance Center (Egg Harbor, WI) or Calvary Lutheran Church (Brookfield, WI).
Grace’s presence will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. Her legacy of kindness and love will continue to inspire those whose lives she touched. Grace always strived to make a positive impact on people’s lives, and she will be remembered for her warm smile and her unwavering dedication to her family and friends. She always did her best to bring joy to those around her.
The Gunnlaugsson family invites friends and loved ones to join them in celebrating Grace’s life at a memorial service to be held at a later date.
