I was deeply saddened when I learned today, Jan 12, 2020 about sudden passing away of Professor Saxena on November 27, 2019. When I started graduate studies at UWM in 1985 as a doctoral student, Professor Saxena was the Department Chair. I learnt a lot from one class that I took under him in my first semester. In spite of his busy schedule with DOE funded IAC (Industrial Assessment Center) for many years during 1985-1988 timeframe he used to always follow up with graduate, especially doctoral students about their progress on a regular basis. His advice on any topic including research interests and potential direction one should take was always direct and very concise. I remained in touch with him on occasional basis over the thirty years up to 2017. Last time I personally met with Professor Saxena was during my October 2017 visit to Milwaukee when he briefed me about his post-retirement activities. During that meeting I decided to work with him on his recent research interest that he was pursuing lately, all because of his enthusiasm and encouragement. We worked on it over the last two years right up to the end of October 2019 when he provided his critique on the final report I prepared & delivered in June 2019. During these two years we were exchanging text messages at least on a monthly basis. During this time I also learnt how deeply Professor Saxena was involved with academics and professional interests of his grand kids. I’ll dearly miss my dear Professor Saxena every day for many-many years.

Dr. Saxena was my thesis guide and professor while I was finishing my masters in IE. His ability to make complex things simple was incredible. I am deeply saddened to hear of his passing. He was a kind person always caring of his students. Thank you for everything Dr.Saxena.

I worked with Umesh for many years at UWM. He was an effective and dynamic leader. Recently he and I shared space in the engineering emeritus office. I have great respect for him and mourn his sudden passing.

How sad...Umesh was a scholar and good friend. I know him from the time he arrived at UWM. He was conscientious, hard working and a gentle person who cared about students and the university. He continued to contribute to his profession after retirement. I would often see him in the emeritus room as he worked on special projects and helped students. I will miss our discussions and his good nature

I have known Umesh since his early days at UWM. I will always remember him as a thoughtful, gentle and warm colleague who contributed much to the College of Engineering and Applied Science and to his profession. May he rest in peace.

We just saw Dr. Saxena at the UWM College of Engineering & Applied Science Emeritus Luncheon Oct. 30, 2019. We lost a friend, teacher and overall kind person. May he rest in peace.

A staple of my childhood and will never be forgotten.

A teacher and guide life long. Soft spoken. Affectionate like a fatherly figure; caring as a mother. Younger, loved ones have lot to learn from him.

Dear friend since before 1975. Always gracious and caring. May his soul Rest In Peace and may God give strength to family and friends.

Dr. Saxena was a friend and advocate for all students enrolled in the Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering program at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee (UWM). He was especially interested in the work of Industrial Engineers in healthcare settings. He was active in the Southeastern Wisconsin Chapter of the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (now the Wisconsin Chapter of HIMSS) for many years, I had the privilege of speaking to students in his class on several occasions. He was a valued faculty member and leader at UWM and he will be missed by all who knew him.
