Rolland, Doris “Colby”

Doris “Colby” found peace on January 16, 2022 at age 84. She was preceded in death by her parents, many beloved relatives in Norway, and a lifetime of special friends, as well as fur family members, including Judy, Smoky, Heidi, Odin, Jenny, Rudy, Bjorn, and Kaffe. Doris (Colby) leaves behind countless treasured Norwegian relatives and many dear friends nearby.

She fondly recalled and retold stories of those she knew and loved while a student at Bay View High School, Carthage College, and UW-M, then as a social worker, children’s librarian, and while spending a quarter-century as a teacher at Milwaukee’s Alexander Mitchell School. She lived her long life with independence, intention, and service, from childhood on, before filling her retirement years with many interests, especially animal care and companionship. She played multiple musical instruments, with piano always closest to her heart and hands. Visiting relatives in Norway and hosting some of them here in Wisconsin were high points in her life.

Sincere thanks to the many staff at The Lutheran Home and AccentCare Hospice (Seasons) who provided care, comfort, companionship, and peace in her last weeks and hours of life.

Visitation at Krause Funeral Home, 12401 West National Avenue, New Berlin, with masks required, will be held on Thursday, January 20, 2022 at 4:00 PM until service begins at 5:00 PM. The service will be streamed on multiple platforms to allow for distant and safe attendance. (See links at Krause website) Doris was nothing if not safety-conscious and would not encourage anyone to risk health to attend in person.

In memory of Doris Lee Rolland, Ivar Rolland lit a candle

Thank you for this opportunity to share a few words with you about Doris Rolland, a cherished relative. She was loving and generous and Doris always went the extra mile to care for others. After learning we had relatives in Wisconsin, several of us arranged to meet Doris in her home. She provided a feast for royalty and her warm personality radiated. Doris loved dogs, just like us, and we admired how she taught her beloved Kaffe so many tricks. She had amazing patience. Upon meeting Doris, we knew she was someone we wanted to keep close. She opened her heart to us and we are forever thankful for our connection to her. We enjoyed exchanging cards and gifts with her. She and Sandy remembered to recognize every special occasion. We loved reading the cards they sent to all of us. Doris and Sandy helped teach the children that there are always good and kind people in the world. Doris was an angel on Earth. We had a short time to get to know our newfound relative, but we feel extremely blessed to have known her and will always hold our memories of her in our hearts. Dearest Doris. Thank you for all the birthday present and Christmas present you have sent to me, and all other relatives in Norway, for our entire lifes. You have truly made each and every birthday special to us with your heartwarming cards and presents. I can say that I am absolutely sure that me and my siblings were the only ones running around in Osterøy, near Bergen Norway, with t-shirts and caps stating "I love Wisconsin" when we were small. We have many times been amazed and stunned that you have kept on remembering our birthdays, wedding aniversaries and in latest years also our children's birthdays. Thank you for keeping in touch our whole lives <3 I hope you find peace where you are now. Lot of loves from Dorthea, Øyvind (husband), Astrid (3 yo) and Halvor (1 yo).

We have been very fortunate to visit you in the Wiscounsin a few times, and never forget the good times we all had together. It remains as some of our fondest memories. Dear Sany, Our condolences on your loss. We have great memories of Doris. Her cards and gifts throughout the year felt we had an aunt overseas. I was lucky to be able to visit you and Doris some years ago and was welcomed with love and warmth. As an indoor rower myself I was really impressed finding out she was also daily exercising on her Concept2 rowing machine. That inspired me. Love to you. Nils Rolland and family.
