During high school in Jackson MI, Don excelled in debate and music; was Co-MC of the annual talent show and was commencement speaker at graduation. Don attended Kalamazoo College and graduated from the University of Michigan (B.A.’66, M.B.A. ’67). It was at the Michigan Union (for small stakes) that Don began to develop his bridge skills, which he first learned from his parents.
During his business career, Don was an investment analyst/manager (Chicago, 1967-76) and subsequently was President of his management company (Milwaukee, 1977-2005) specializing in benefits administration and association management. Don received national recognition for his executive director and state legislative achievements from the American Subcontractors Association.
In retirement in 2006 Don enjoyed golf and resumed competing in tournament bridge, achieving Diamond Life Master status, earning numerous sectional and regional titles and from 2007 to 2014, placing in the Top Five Hundred listing with the national ACBL. Don was most grateful for the many wonderful partners and teammates, as well as the thousands of players throughout the country with whom he was able to compete. Don was proud to be able to compete in bridge, notwithstanding the brain tumor diagnosed in Dec. 2004 and lymphoma, diagnosed in 2015. Don expressed his gratitude to the medical team at UW Cancer Center at ProHealth, his family and friends for their unwavering support.
