(nee Elefteriou) Entered God’s Loving Arms on Wednesday, October 9, 2019. Age 90. Reunited with her beloved husband Arthur G. Gamouras. Loving mother of Dr. George A. Gamouras and Urania Gamouras. Proud yiayia of Yanni, Demetra, Katerina, and Vasoula. Cherished sister of Sophia Elefteriou. Also loved by many other relatives and friends.
Demetra was born in Samos, on an island in Greece in 1929. Her father was a photographer, but her parents also ran the local Kafenio in the village of Kastania. Her grandfather was the Priest who helped build the towns church (Eklesia Kemeses Tes Theotokos) She referred to herself as “a child of the church” because of the love and teachings her grandfather instilled in her.
At the age of 18 she moved to Athens, and worked as a Hair stylist in Luxe salon. On one of the picnic outings that the salon held, she met her beloved Arthur.
Arthur immigrated to the US to prepare for their future, all while they held a long distance romance for over 3 years, her love of poetry was evident in every letter she sent to him.
They were married in 1961, and together they returned to the US. Arthur was the love of her life, and she was his “Agape”. For over 25 years they worked their restaurant, Lake Port Coffee Shop until they retired in 1992, and returned to Greece.
For the next 17 years they spent time with family, traveled, and rediscovered their native country. In 2009 they returned to the US, to be reunited with their true loves, their grandchildren, and extended family.
Demetra loved to cook, and her Avgolemono soup, Mousaka, and greek pastries were her signature cuisine. Her church, family, and friends gave her the greatest joy in life. She will be forever engrained in our hearts with the love, humor, and the kindness she showed to all who knew her.
