A Life Full of Laughter
Clay Durler passed away peacefully on January 16, 2026, just two days shy of his 89th birthday. Born on January 18, 1937, Clay lived a life defined by steady work, devoted service, and an unwavering commitment to making people groan with his legendary “corny” sense of humor. He never met a “Dad joke” he didn’t like, and he spent nearly nine decades perfecting the art of the well-timed pun. While we all mourn his loss, we are certain he is already busy scouting out the best material for his next corny joke. Clay truly believed that a good pun was its own reward (and a bad one was even better).
Clay spent most of his career as an Engineering Technician at WE Energies. Upon retirement, he didn’t slow down; he simply shifted his “engineering” skills toward building a stronger community. He was a familiar and friendly face at Ascension Lutheran Church and a dedicated volunteer with the NMB Fraternal Benefit Society, where he gave generously of his time and spirit.
Clay’s greatest joy was his family. He is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Alice, who was the patient and loving audience for every one of his jokes since they first met.
His legacy continues through his children and grandchildren:
- Gordon Durler and his wife Lori, along with their daughters Jaimie and Kelly (husband Clayton).
- Gary Durler and his wife Amy, along with their sons Collin (wife Haley) and Aaron.
Clay was preceded in death by his sister Gwen (Erickson) and son, Ronald, with whom he is now surely reunited.
Clay’s warmth, his dedication to his faith, and his ability to find humor in any situation will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Visitation will take place on Saturday, February 7, 2026 at Krause Funeral Home, 12401 West National Avenue, New Berlin, Wisconsin from 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM. A Service will begin at 11:00 AM.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be sent to MADACC (Milwaukee Area Domestic Animal Control Commission) or Ascension Lutheran Church Milwaukee.
