Charlotte Mary Steck (Neuwald), age 96, formally of Madison, passed away peacefully in Pewaukee while residing at Heritage Court Memory Care, on Saturday, June 27th, 2026.
Born in Chicago on January 1st, 1930 to Frank and Emilie Neuwald, she was the first of her family to be born in the United States. She was preceded in death by her faithful husband of 70 years, Robert Steck (of Madison), her parents, her siblings: Frank (Marie) Neuwald, Elizabeth (Ed) Stieg, Ernest Neuwald, and Nancy (Richard) Farren. She is survived by her two devoted daughters: Carol (Todd) Knapp and Karen (James) Kautzer, six grandchildren: Jason (Kellie) Knapp, Jennifer (Kyle) Pederson, Jeremy (Jen) Knapp, Stephanie (Nate) West, Laura (Andy) Nighbor, and Nathan (Meghan) Kautzer, 21 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren.
Charlotte graduated from Pulaski High School in 1948 where she met Robert Steck. On June 2nd, 1951 the high school sweethearts were married at Blessed Sacrament Church in Milwaukee. They settled into family life in New Berlin in 1958 where they built their first home and raised their two children until transferring to Sheboygan in 1971. Their next move to Madison in 1974 started their new adventures together.
As devoted Badger Football fans, Charlotte and Bob were fortunate to enjoy following the team several times to Hawaii and watch two of their grandchildren perform in the UW Marching Band. She certainly was fond of their Friday night fish fry’s, card games with close friends, church bowling league trips, and traveling the globe to their favorite locations, Germany, Alaska, Hawaii and the Western U.S. Boating and fishing with Bob and the kids in Northern Wisconsin was one of her favorite things to do.
Her family remembers their home gatherings were always full of good food and good times. Her special recipes of German potato salad and rum cake are now treasured for years to come, whether for a holiday or just pure nostalgia. Her gentleness and kindness were always on display as she loved talking to dear friends and new people, always sharing a smile or a story that would end in laughter.
“Mom, you will always remain in our hearts and memories, you will be missed. “
With deepest gratitude we thank the caregivers at All Saints Memory Care in Madison, WI, Heritage Court Memory Care in Pewaukee, WI, and Agrace Hospice Services for their endless care and support for Charlotte and her family over the past five years.
Visitation 11:00 AM – 1:30 PM, with service at 1:30 PM, on Wednesday, July 15, 2026 at Krause Funeral Home, 12401 West National Avenue, New Berlin, Wisconsin.
