Carole Jean Speckin (née Chaput)
Passed peacefully on Friday, April 17, 2026, at the age of 99.
Beloved mother of Cynthia Fueredi and John (Kim) Speckin Jr. Proud grandmother of Katie Speckin (Sam), Lauren Speckin (David Draeger), Meghan Speckin-Duffek (Justin Duffek), and Victoria Speckin (Andrew McWilliams), as well as all her cherished grand-dogs. She was also eagerly anticipating the arrival of her first great-grandchild, expected July 3, 2026, to Lauren and David.
She is further survived by her cherished nephews Gary Zwick, Dean Zwick (Sue), and Greg Zwick (Debbie), along with many great-nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Elizabeth and Henry Chaput; her husbands, LeRoy Mucha and John Speckin Sr.; her son, Ward Speckin; her sister, Marie Zwick; and her brother, Leo Chaput. She was also preceded in death by her dear companions, William Hernke and Gene Doepping.
Carole was born on December 20, 1926, on a farm in Iron Mountain, Michigan, the youngest of three children. It was there that she developed a lifelong love of animals, especially dogs and horses, and discovered her passion for the piano, which remained an important and lasting part of her life.
In 1942, her family moved to Milwaukee, where she graduated from South Division High School. She continued her piano studies at the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music and was a member of the Young People’s Orchestra.
As a young woman, she and her sister Marie enjoyed going to dances at the Eagles Club, where she met LeRoy Mucha. They were married on May 12, 1945, at Saint Matthew’s Church in Milwaukee. In 1953, they welcomed their daughter, Cynthia.
In the early 1950s, Carole’s musical creativity led her to collaborate with WOKY radio legend and neighbor Johnny “Mad Man” Michaels. Together, they wrote and recorded several novelty 45’s poking fun at Milwaukee’s south side and its people. These recordings have been remastered and can still be found on YouTube.
She loved entertaining and hosting dinner parties, often writing plays and musicals in which every guest had a role. There was always music in her home—whether from her beloved Steinway, her theater organ, or her extensive record collection.
Her outgoing personality and genuine enjoyment of people were reflected in her work life, which consistently involved customer engagement, from reception to sales. She retired after 15 years with Sears in 1987.
The year 1980 brought profound loss, as she endured the deaths of her husband, brother, and mother within a three-month period. She was sustained during this difficult time by the love of family, friends, and her faith.
On June 10, 1982, Carole married John Speckin Sr. at Hales Corners Lutheran Church and began building a new life with John and his two sons, John Jr. and Ward, in Greendale and later Franklin. John introduced her to the outdoors, and she quickly embraced lake life—boating, fishing, and weekends at their campground on Green Lake. Sadly, the family later mourned the loss of Ward in 1987.
As John Jr. and his wife Kim began their family, Carole became a proud grandmother to four girls who were an absolute delight in her life. Watching them grow into kind, caring, and accomplished women filled her with pride, and she celebrated each of their journeys.
In 1995, John Sr. passed away, and once again Carole was comforted by the steadfast support of her family and loyal friends.
Shortly after John’s passing, she met her recently widowed neighbor, Bill Hernke. Carole and Bill formed a strong bond and, in 2008, left Wisconsin to build a home together in Huntley, Illinois. They enjoyed many happy years in Huntley and spent winters in Arizona together until Bill’s passing in 2012.
Carole later returned to Wisconsin to be closer to her family and moved to The Regency Senior Community in New Berlin. It was during a photo shoot for the facility that she was seated next to Gene Doepping. From that day forward, they became inseparable. They enjoyed evening cribbage matches, dining out, and attending many local theater performances together. Sadly, Gene passed away on Carole’s birthday in 2020.
In 2025, Carole moved to The Waters assisted living community. It was there that she experienced a fall from which she was unable to fully regain her independence. She was later relocated to the skilled nursing care at Shorehaven in Oconomowoc, where she received compassionate and attentive care. Her family gathered with her there to celebrate her 99th birthday.
Carole will be remembered for her vibrant personality, her creativity, her love of music, and most of all, her deep devotion to her family and friends. Her life was full, rich with relationships, laughter, resilience, and enduring love that carried her through every chapter. She now rests in the peace of God’s eternal care, reunited with those who went before her.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Shorehaven in Oconomowoc for their compassionate and attentive care, and to Agrace Hospice Care for their kindness, dignity, and support during Carole’s final days. She will be deeply missed and forever held in the hearts of her family and all who knew and loved her.
Visitation will be held at Krause Funeral Home, 21600 West Capitol Drive, Brookfield, Wisconsin, on Monday, May 4, 2026, from 3:00 PM to 4:45 PM, with a funeral service to follow at 5:00 PM. Entombment will be held privately at Forest Home Cemetery in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
