Brek Louis Renzelman, 63, passed away on Tuesday November 28th, 2023, at home, in Fox Point, Wisconsin, after a difficult battle with CLL, chronic lymphocytic leukemia.
Brek grew up in Lock Haven Pennsylvania before moving to the Milwaukee area. He was born on September 9, 1960, in Newport Beach, California, to Gary E. Renzelman and Mary Frances (Robinson) Renzelman.
After graduating from Indiana University School of Music, Brek was named assistant principal violist with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra for the 1985-1986 season. His next assignment was with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra in Atlanta Georgia. He returned to Milwaukee to marry Wendy in 1987, and to pursue his passion of viola with Present Music from 1992 to 2010. In his freelance career, Brek has recorded with international soloists, acted as principal violist for the Milwaukee Chamber Orchestra, and performed in the Milwaukee Symphony viola section in long and short term roles during the past two decades. Brek published a book about his wife’s battle with cancer and devoted much time to social activism.
Brek will be much missed in the Kepler Quartet of which he performed and recorded Ben Johnston’s music. Please visit the Kepler Quartet website for more information.
He is survived by his parents, Gary and Mary Renzelman, his brother Todd Renzelman (Pamela), cousins (Linda Layton, Durham, NC; Peggy Kelley, Omaha, NE; and Pamela Schumacher, Lincoln, NE) and is preceded in death by his wife, Wendy Lynette Gannett.
The family would like to thank everyone who supported the Kepler Quartet and Brek’s career in music and suggest memorial contributions be made to their local orchestra!
Please share a memory, and we look forward to a Celebration of Life – (more information to follow).
