Betty Leona Glatting

Betty Leona Glatting (nee Chase), passed away peacefully at Sharehaven Memory Care in Oshkosh, WI, on February 2, 2024 at the age of 93. She was one day shy of her 94^th birthday.

Betty was the beloved wife of the late James Otto Glatting. She was a loving mom to Gary (Judy) Glatting, Dean (Betty J.) Glatting, and James “Jimmy” Glatting. She is survived  by her three sons and their spouses, brother Ken (Barbra) Chase, eight grandchildren – children of Gary (Judy) Glatting: Alaina Glatting-Krone (Tyler), Ashley Glatting (Michael Zipperer), Gavin Glatting, Jake Glatting; children of Dean (Betty) Glatting: Brittany Beers (David) and Kaylee Glatting – and three great-grandchildren: Ethan and Ganon (Alaina and Tyler); Otto (Brittany and David).

Betty was preceded in death by her parents Clyde Chase Sr. and Esther Chase (nee Erikson), her husband James, and her siblings, Byllie Melloch (Medard), Clyde Chase II (Rosemarie), and Eugene Chase.

Betty was born in Lansing, Michigan and when young, the family of seven moved to Tacoma, Washington. Betty graduated from St. Leo’s Catholic all-girls high school in Tacoma in 1948. A few years later, Betty became a USO volunteer during the Korean War where she met Army Corporal James “Jim” Glatting at a local USO dance. She had found her dance partner for life! Jim and Betty were married on September 11, 1954 at Fort Lewis Chapel in Washington and moved to Milwaukee in 1955 where Jim began a career with the Milwaukee Public School District and Betty began her life as a mom and homemaker.  Betty was a practicing Catholic and enjoyed attending weekly Mass.  She volunteered to support her boys’ activities and was a den mother for Cub Scouts for a few years.

Together, Betty and Jim raised three active boys and the family enjoyed camping, boating, downhill skiing and water skiing. Betty loved to garden, complete puzzles, quilt, sew, crochet, and knit.  She enjoyed knitting some special sweaters and blankets for relatives and grandchildren.  She also loved to bake and made some of the best baking powder biscuits, and her Red Velvet cake was one of her specialties. Her baking and cooking will live on as many of her recipes have been passed down to her children and grandchildren to enjoy for years to come.

After Jim’s retirement, Betty and Jim permanently moved north to their vacation home on Wolf Lake in Wausaukee, WI and enjoyed long walks and the beauty of the nature around them. Betty especially liked feeding the birds and deer and growing flowers, vegetables, and cactuses. Betty’s sister Byllie and her husband also moved up to the lake and Betty had many years of enjoyment visiting with her sister who lived down the road. Betty also loved Teddy Bears.  She had a very large collection displayed around her home and she especially enjoyed “their little faces.” The grand kids loved to play with them when they spent time at their lake home. Betty and Jim also enjoyed watching the Packers, Badgers, and Brewers games together. They were even Packer stockholders.

The relaxed atmosphere of the lake life allowed them time to enjoy sips of red wine in the afternoons, welcome family and friends for visits and boat rides, and enjoy outdoor activities.  Betty was still water skiing at the age of 75, kicking off a ski to slalom. Jim and Betty often took vacations together: visiting family in Arizona, canoe trips down many Wisconsin and Michigan Upper Peninsula rivers, Boundary Waters, a cruise ship tour along the Alaskan coastline, a rafting trip down the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon, downhill skiing in the Rockies, visiting Hawaii, exploring many national parks in the west, and bike rides on the Elroy-Sparta Trail.

In 2008, Jim and Betty downsized and moved to Oshkosh to be closer to family, as their Wolf Lake home was proving too much to handle. They continued to enjoy time together and took walks and bike rides along the shore of Lake Winnebago and welcomed visits from family and friends. Not long after Jim’s passing in 2016, health reasons nudged Betty into an assisted living facility where she continued to enjoy reading, joining in activities, and completing puzzles. She loved visits, phone calls, cards and letters from family and friends and she enjoyed seeing pictures of family that were unable to visit. Following COVID and progressive dementia life began slowing down for Betty. She continued to have a positive outlook and used a walker to get around. It was a fall on Jan. 31^st that proved to be too much trauma for her to endure.

Betty was loved by many, and her attitude and polite manners that she showed up until her final days were admired by many who cared for her.

The Glatting family would like to extend their deep appreciation to the staff of Lake Shore Manor, Evergreen Sharehaven, Generations Home & Hospice Care and her PCP Dr. Gurkit Miranpuri of Aurora Medical Center all in Oshkosh, WI for their great care and support.

Visitation for Betty will be held at Krause Funeral Home, 9000 West Capitol Drive, Milwaukee, Wisconsin on Friday, February 9, 2024 from 10:30 AM – 11:30 AM with a Memorial Service immediately following. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery in Milwaukee.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to Dementia Society of America will be appreciated.
