Betty J. Dumas

Betty Jean Dumas, 78, passed away on October 20, 2025, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Born on November 15, 1947, in Pine Hill, Alabama, she lived a vibrant and multifaceted life that touched many across generations and communities.

Raised as the only child of Ella Mae Dumas and Joe, Betty was the eldest in a blended family that would grow to include her beloved siblings: brothers Nate (Sandra) Clark, Robert (Mary) Smith, Willie (Grace) Manning, and Peter (Nancy) Manning; and sisters Carolyn Breckenridge, Vanessa Manning, and Patricia Manning. She was preceded in death by her brother Tony Manning.

Betty’s early years were shaped by her move to Milwaukee, where she attended public schools before graduating from Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC). Her pursuit of education continued in Chicago at Kennedy King College, where she earned an associate degree. She also studied modeling and acting at John Robert Powers School, further expanding her creative talents.

A woman of remarkable ambition and charisma, Betty carved out a unique path in the entertainment industry during the 1960s and 1970s. She promoted early shows for Lionel Richie and The Commodores in Alabama and performed with legendary artists such as The Temptations and Garland Green-contributing background vocals to artists Garland Green “Plain and Simple Girl.” Her musical journey brought her into close collaboration with iconic figures including The O’Jays and Marvin Gaye. She even rehearsed with her family friends, The Jackson 5, at High Chaparral on Stoney Island Avenue in Chicago. As a background singer and dancer, Betty traveled extensively during this era alongside some of the most celebrated performers of the time.

Her entrepreneurial spirit extended beyond music. From a young age, Betty ventured into various business endeavors. She owned and operated Betty’s Collectables-a small business that reflected her love for travel and unique finds. Her ability to promote professional performances demonstrated not only her business acumen but also her enduring passion for the arts.

Betty was deeply rooted in faith. Raised as a Jehovah’s Witness, she held steadfast belief in God and our Lord and Savior throughout her life.

She shared a loving marriage with Jerome J. Casimir until her passing. Together they raised two children: Crystal (Fred) Cruz-Harris and Timmy Dumas. Betty was preceded in death by her son Timmy but leaves behind cherished memories through Crystal.

Her legacy continues through five grandchildren: Zakkiyah Dumas, Hannan Dumas, Malika Dumas, Emmanuel Cruz, and Lydia Cruz. She is also remembered fondly by a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends whose lives were enriched by knowing her.

Betty Jean Dumas will be remembered not only for her artistic contributions but also for her unwavering determination and compassionate heart. May her memory bring comfort to those who knew her and continue to inspire all who hear her story.

A Visitation will be held on Sunday, November 2, 2025, at Krause Funeral Home, 9000 West Capital Drive, Milwaukee, Wisconsin from 10:00 AM until the time of Funeral Service, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM. All family members are welcome to visit and pay their respects.
