Barbara Claire Nuland (nee Mullen) passed away peacefully on January 8, 2024, in La Crosse, WI.
She was born on March 31, 1934, to Lyman and Irma (Havey) Mullen. She graduated valedictorian from Deerfield High School in 1952 and married the love of her life, Stanley Nuland, on October 2, 1954. She and Stanley raised four daughters and a son in Platteville, Wisconsin, where Stanley had his medical practice. After their children finished school, they moved to the Milwaukee area to pursue new adventures. Barbara worked for Milwaukee Public Schools for 20 years as a census taker, retiring in 1989.
When she wasn’t cooking great meals for her husband and family holidays, she spent time quilting at her church and at home, knitting mittens and crocheting afghans as gifts. She was very generous and donated many of her completed items to various charities. Barbara spent years gathering genealogical information on her family and published a book, “Honor Thy Father and Thy Mother, the Havey and Christianson Families”. Family was very important to her, but covid and distance limited the time spent with grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren. She was an avid fan of the Green Bay Packers, Jeopardy, Lawrence Welk and Bingo.
Barbara is survived by her daughters Andrea (Don) Saunders of Platteville, WI and Dagny Aiken of Waco, TX, and her son, David (Carmen) of Galesville, WI. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, and 4 great-great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, a sister Mary Jones and her husband Clark, two daughters, Siri Hernandez and Jane Nuland, a son in law Joseph Hernandez, and her beloved uncle and aunt Delane and Elaine Havey.
Her Family wishes to thank Marinuka Manor in Galesville, WI for their wonderful care these last months of her life.
Funeral services will be held on January 17, 2024, at 11:30 AM at Unity Lutheran Church-Cross of Life campus 20700 West North Avenue, Brookfield, WI with visitation from 10:30 AM until time of service. Interment will be at Deerfield Lutheran Cemetery, Liberty Road Deerfield, WI.
