Audrey Marx (nee Dembinski), age 92, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on December 3, 2023.
Born in Milwaukee, Audrey attended St. John’s Cathedral High School and was a graduate of St. Mary’s School of Nursing in 1951. Throughout her life, she stayed in the nursing profession as a Surgical Nurse at St. Luke’s Hospital and as an Office Nurse with Drs. Kopf & Smigelski’s Office & ENT Nurse at Teamsters Local 200 Clinic. Along with her sister Doris, they embarked on adventures across the country, but Wisconsin always kept a piece of her heart.
She married former classmate James in 1961 after reuniting with him at their 10 year high school reunion. Her joyfulness as a mother began with the birth of her daughter Mary Beth. During these years, Audrey stayed close to home as an Avon Lady and Girl Scout Leader. As someone who served others, she made sure Mary Beth always had a warm lunch at home and waited for her to tell of her adventures at school. Along with her family, some of the most memorable vacations were spent in Door County (Fish Creek). She enjoyed hosting numerous dinner parties, family holidays, and pool parties where there were always plenty of food and drink set up in the finest manner. Audrey was a long-time parishioner of St. Mary’s Catholic Community in Hales Corners and a member of the Hales Corners Women’s Club.
In her free time, she enjoyed golf and volunteered at the Medical College of Wisconsin. An avid sports fan, Audrey spent all of her weekends, cheering ‘her boys’ (aka the Green Bay Packers) along with the Marquette Basketball team and the Brewers. She moved to San Camillus Community in 2011 where she continued to knit her famous Afghans, expand her friendships, and mature her strong Catholic faith.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, James Marx, and her wonderful sisters Jackie (Lou) Leyton and Doris Dembinski. She is survived by her daughter and friend MaryBeth (Ron) Hess, sister-in-law & traveling companion Kay (Ed) Cieslik, the Marx family, God Son Paul Leyton and family, her lifelong friend Carol Saric, and her beloved “San Cam Fam.” She will be remembered as a vibrant and independent woman of faith who dedicated her life to nursing and caring for others.
