Al “Stork” Hansen passed away peacefully on November 22rd at age 98. He was born in 1926 in the back bedroom of a bungalow at 112 Orchard Avenue in Pewaukee, the second oldest of 8 children born to Alfred and Irene Hansen. He graduated from Pewaukee High in 1944, where he was a standout 3-sport athlete. Following graduation, he enlisted in the US Army during WWII, thus becoming one of America’s Greatest Generation. He was en route to Japan when the atomic bombs dropped on August 6th and 9th, 1945, and he turned 19 on board his ship 3 days later.
After serving 2 years in Japan, he was discharged, and he returned to Pewaukee, where he married his wife of 52 years, Eunice Dohmen. Together they raised 2 sons, Tom and Jim. In 1959, Al became co-owner of Hansen Oil Co. with his brother, Don, a business they operated jointly until 1976. He would later dabble in real estate, before retiring after a 10-year stint in the Brookfield Post Office.
“Stork,” as he was known by most, was a central figure in Pewaukee, serving as a village trustee before being elected Village President. Also an active member in the Kiwanis Club, he was named Pewaukee Man of the Year in 1982. He loved Pewaukee deeply and remained an active voice in local politics, as well as an avid fan and supporter of Pewaukee athletics. He loved sports, especially baseball, and was a rabid fan of the St. Louis Cardinals. He often boasted that he was a Cardinal fan for over 90 years, first listening to their broadcasts from a Peoria, Illinois, station on his father’s console radio at age 5. He played for and managed Pewaukee’s Land ‘o Lakes Baseball team, and was elected to the LoL Hall of Fame in 2004. In later years, he could be seen at LoL games on most Sundays. Also an avid golfer, he scored his first – and only – hole-in-one at age 80.
Al was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Eunice, as well as three brothers and three sisters. He is survived by his sister, Susan, and by his sons Tom (Elisa) of Milwaukee, and Jim (Mary) of La Crosse. He is further survived by his loving grandchildren Kerstin (Matt) Mestelle, Alissa Hansen, Jordan Hansen, and Keenan (Emily) Reynolds, and his 5 great grandchildren.
“Dad always joked that nobody would be at his funeral because he’d outlived them all. We think he may be surprised.”
Al loved people, and people loved him back. He will be greatly missed by many, but his legacy will live in our hearts forever. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 7, 2024 at Krause Funeral Home, 21600 West Capitol Drive, Brookfield, Wisconsin, with visitation from 10:00 AM – 11:45 AM, followed by a short memorial service and lunch.
The family would like to thank the staff at Kirkland Crossing for their concern and great care, and the Stevens family and Michelle Wells for their friendship over the years.
In lieu of flowers, memorials appreciated to a charity of your choice.
