Here are 5 ways to give to the community you call home:
Volunteer your time.
Volunteering is one of the most fulfilling ways to give back to your community. There are many different options for volunteering locally. You may decide to spend time reshelving books at your local library, serving meals at a homeless shelter, or cleaning up a park. If you’re nervous about volunteering alone, ask a friend or family member to join you.
Make a donation.
Those who have the means to donate money to a local charity find it a very rewarding way to give back. We recommend finding a charity that aligns with your values. Even if you don’t have the funds to make a monetary gift, consider donating gently used clothing or household goods to your local Goodwill or Salvation Army.
Visit a senior center.
Many older adults experience social isolation and loneliness because they feel removed from workplace activities and day-to-day family life. Even life at a senior center can feel isolating and lonely at times. Spending an afternoon at your local nursing home reading to seniors or playing games with them helps a lot.
Support your neighbors.
Your community begins right outside your doorstep, and this includes your neighbors. Doing a random act of kindness for someone a few doors down from you can be fulfilling for everyone involved. Leave an encouraging note in a neighbor’s mailbox or stop by their house with a batch of freshly baked cookies.
Sponsor a child in need.
There are numerous local and national organizations that are committed to helping children in need around the world. Depending on the organization you choose, multiple sponsorship levels are available, so you can find one that fits your budget. If you can, pledge to support a child in need for a year. It’s a gratifying act of kindness that gives you the chance to see the impact of your support over a length of time.
