Ursula Helene Plieth passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 28th, 2023 at age 91. Preceded in death by her husband, Heinz and son, Gerald. Loving mother of Corrine Plieth. She will be greatly missed by her family in Germany: dear sister Brigitte (Friedrich) Schulz; nieces, Maren (Jörg), Lisa (Luzian) and nephew, Ralf (Livia).
Ursula was born on December 20th, 1931 in East Prussia. Her early years were influenced by World War II, which helped her to cultivate her well-known qualities of independence, fearlessness, and resilience.
After the war, Ursula’s family was forced to relocate to what was then called Western Germany. The successful family farm was now located in Poland and inaccessible to them.
It was during this time that Ursula reconnected with Heinz Plieth, a young man from her hometown. Heinz was pleased to discover that the skinny farm girl he once knew was now a beautiful young woman. The pair quickly fell in love. Heinz had plans to immigrate to America and Ursula said yes to both the adventure and the marriage. They were united in a civil ceremony in Germany on August 14th 1951 which was followed by a church ceremony on September 9th.
On December 14th, 1951 they boarded the USS General LeRoy Eltinge, an American army transport ship that was bound for New York. They arrived in New York on December 29th and arrived in Milwaukee on December 30th, where they found themselves received warmly by their relatives, the Brandt family.
Ursula and Heinz enthusiastically pursued their new life. They learned English from the television. They became U.S. citizens. They both found full time jobs. They purchased a home.
Ursula gave birth to a son, Gerald and a daughter, Corrine. She took a little break from her job after each birth but otherwise she continued to work full-time while being a wife and mother, something relatively uncommon at the time. Working hard was another one of Ursula’s many attributes.
Ursula and Heinz were very involved in the German groups and activities in their community. They were a frequent presence at German events and dances, which they attended with their many friends. The pair shared a love of genealogy and volunteered for many years at Germanfest to share their expertise. Ursula was a proud member of Pommern Club.
After her husband and son passed, Ursula remained steadfastly independent. She continued to live in her home and even adopted her son’s dog, CJ.
Throughout the years, Ursula’s favorite thing was to connect with people. She loved interacting with everyone. She was always accepting and welcoming and no one left her home hungry or thirsty if she could help it. Her absolute favorite activity was a festive dinner party and she always put the needs of others first.
Special thanks to Herbert Jerke, Carl Rinaldi, and Amy and Stella Chavie for their love and support, especially in Ursula’s later years.
