Nikolas H. Markos – Reunited with his wife Mary, of 37 years, on Saturday, February 18, 2023, age 92.
Proud father of Harry Nick (Kateri) Markos and Anna (Tom) Stamas. Proud grandfather of Caris (Jules) Miller, Nikolas (Jami) Markos, Zeus Markos, Maria (Bo) Sadowske and Paul (Cassandra) Stamas. Great grandfather of Macklin, Olexa, Ariadne and Lennox. Cherished sister of Panagiota Stefanides. Further survived by other family members and friends. Preceded in death by parents Harry and Eftihia Markos; brother Peter Markos; sisters Maria and Asimina.
Niko came over from Greece in his early twenties and quickly made a long lasting impact in the states by starting the Century Coffee Shop in downtown Milwaukee. His life was dedicated to serving others. While running the business for over 32 years, he also owned Nikos Family Restaurant in Franklin, and the motel next door. Graciously, Niko employed many of his friends and family at the restaurant, and hosted their most significant events.
He and his wife, Mary, enjoyed partaking in the county fairs in the summer, where they sold Gyro sandwiches and other Greek cuisine. Also, they operated several acclaimed food stands together at the 1982 and 1984 Worlds Fairs.
In addition, Niko owned a home in Port Charlotte, Florida, where you could either find him fishing with his friends or helping others as the neighborhood handyman.
After his wife died in 1991, Niko spent the summers with his daughter and son-in-law, helping take care of his grandchildren. He loved driving them to school events and watching them compete in sports. Also, he took pride in serving as their personal chef, making some dishes so “tasty” that they weren’t worth getting anywhere else but at home.
As time went on, Niko’s mornings were filled with coffee and laughter with his friends and family at A&W and Gyros West. He loved surrounding himself with the people he cared for, making the most of every opportunity to cherish his relationships.
The last chapter of his life was spent living on Pewaukee lake, listening to Greek music, and watching his great grandkids grow. He passed in the comfort and support of his children and will continue to impact the lives of generations to come.
