Mildred M. Ahlers

(nee Burke) At the age of 89, Mildred M. Ahlers (Millie), nee Burke, was laid to eternal rest on May 28, 2016 surrounded by family. Millie is survived by five children, Henry Ahlers (Mary Lou) of Nashotah, Gerard Ahlers (Anne) of Mio Michigan, Thomas Ahlers of Oconomowoc WI, Therese Ahlers (Chris) of Ferryville WI and Margaret Hess (John) of Hartland WI. Millie is further survived by seven grandchildren – Tracy Potrzebowske (Joe), Danny Ahlers (Ashley), Jake Hess, Jaquelyn Ahlers, Catherine Hess, Joshua Ahlers, and Annabelle Ahlers – and four great grandchildren – Georgia, Oliver, Cole and Jayson. Millie is also survived by her nieces and nephews, the Willig's who she was particularly close to, Lynny (Ken) Sherman of Michigan, Ray "Buzzy" (Deb) of Kentucky, Chrissy (Gerry O) of Indiana, Susie of North Carolina, Tom of Colorado and Michael (Kelley) of Tennessee.

Millie was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Bud, who died just 6 months ago. Their marriage was full of love and laughter. Also preceded in death by her parents, Bridget and Thomas Burke and her only sibling, a sister, Gerry Willig.

Millie was born on December 16, 1926 in Chicago Illinois to Thomas and Bridget Burke (nee Carter), who emigrated from Ireland to the United States in the early 1900s. Growing up on the south side of Chicago, Millie attended Calumet High School at 81st and May St in Chicago where she met her lifelong friend, Lil Algozino. After graduating from high school, Millie worked at United Airlines where she learned to play bridge, a game she cherished throughout her life. Millie married Bud on May 10, 1952. Bud and Millie moved to Brookfield WI in 1959 to raise their five children. Millie was a homemaker while her children were young and returned to work at an exclusive dress shop called "After of Fashion" where she helped countless women look their best.

Millie and Bud were devout Catholics and parishioners of St. Dominic's for 56 years. All their children attended catholic grade school at St. Dominic's.

Despite health challenges in recent years Millie's zest for life was strong. Millie brought joy to many with a quick wit and a love of laughter. Always fashionable and poised, Millie looked rather chic throughout her life. Millie was an avid seamstress making many of her children's clothes as youngsters. Millie was kindhearted, compassionate and full of spirit who greeted all with a smile and a loving word or two. With Bud, Millie traveled the United States on countless road trips and many adventures with Bud's colleagues with Messenger Corporation. They made several visits to Ireland. Millie enjoyed shopping, gardening and decorating. A weekly Tuesday bridge group started with a Bloody Mary, just one as Millie would say. The bridge ladies, Jean, Marilyn, Joan, and Laurie will miss Millie's fun loving personality. Mrs. Joan Short, Millie's dear friend will also feel the pain with her absence. Magic Millie to some and Macushla to others, Mrs. Bloom or Mrs. Goldberg, whatever you called her, Millie will be missed by many. Everyone would like just one more cup of tea or Bloody Mary with her!

Visitation will be on Friday, June 3rd, from 10-11:30AM with a mass of Christian Burial following. The visitation and service will take place at St. Dominic's Catholic Church at 18255 W. Capitol Drive Brookfield, WI. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to St. Dominic's Grade School.
