Gifted with a beautiful voice, she won the Metropolitan Opera National Council Audition in the Wisconsin district in 1977. She then sang leading roles with the Milwaukee Opera Company as well as in musical theater for over 8 years, and worked as a paraprofessional aide in the music department at the Milwaukee High School of the Arts for 24 years. She was well-loved by many students and colleagues there. Mary specialized in vocal instruction and served as musical director for many of the school's musicals. Later in her career, she also assisted in the school's special education classroom. Mary's committed and thoughtful instruction inspired not only success, but a great deal of gratitude and self-confidence in those she taught. She remained in touch with many of her students long after graduation, cheering them on in their struggles and accomplishments. In the last years of her life, Mary was a much loved member of the St. Joseph adult choir and bell choir.Mary was also preceded in death by several canine friends, whom she loved dearly. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Humane Society.
