who died on Nov. 27, 2010, was born June 19, 1933, in Franklin County, Iowa, to Eldred and Zella Shupe. In 1951, he graduated from Clarion High School as its class valedictorian and enrolled at Iowa State College, Ames, (now Iowa State University) in its electrical engineering program from which he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1955. While there, he was enrolled in the NROTC program and was nationally ranked as a small bore rifle and pistol shooter. He was awarded the Chicago Tribune Gold Medal in 1955 as the outstanding NROTC student of that year.Following commissioning as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps, he completed Basic School (from which he graduated 10th of 420) and Communication school, both at Quantico VA. Thereafter, he was assigned to the 2nd Marine Division at Camp Lejeune NC as the communication officer for the 2nd Engineer Battalion. Upon his release from active duty in July 1957, he was employed by Square D Company as a field engineer and, later, by Dynex, Pewaukee Wisconsin, in a variety of sales and management responsibilities. He resigned from Dynex in August 1976 to enter Marquette University Law School from which he graduated in 1979. In that year, he and his partner, Eric Klumb, placed 4th in the national moot court competition, Washington DC.Mr. Shupe was a registered patent attorney and engaged in both private and corporate practice, most recently with the firm now known as Jansson, Shupe & Munger in Racine, from which he retired in March 1999. During active practice, he served as President of the Wisconsin Intellectual Property Law Association and chaired the Patent, Trademark and Copyright Section of the State Bar of Wisconsin.He was an Eagle Scout, a Life Member of the National Rifle Association and, for 39 years a member of Our Savior's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Hartland Wisconsin. He served that congregation in a number of responsibilities including as its President.He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Frances, his 3 children, Douglas Shupe of Onalaska, WI, Polly Mauer of Hartland, WI and Andrea Wilson of Bainbridge Island, Washington and 8 grandchildren.A Memorial Service is planned for 5:00 p.m. Friday, December 3, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Hartland.
