John and I attended St. Anne's grade school, located at 36th and Wright streets, from third to eighth grade. My brother Bill and I lived in a duplex on 33rd Street, two blocks north of North Avenue. John lived in a duplex on 32nd Street, one block north of North Avenue. John, his parents, and his sisters, Connie and Darlene, lived upstairs. His grandparents lived downstairs. At that time, there were few organized sports or play. Our parents sent us outside with directions to come home at a certain time. As a result, the neighborhood kids would get together almost daily to play or hang out, or on weekends, go to a movie, mostly horror films.  Our group consisted of me, Bill, John, Dennis Reed, Jimmy Leong, Jimmy Wright, Chuck and Dennis Cyra, and Erik Miller (“Tuffy”). Other kids who joined us from time to time were Gregory Wilkum, Sandy and Kathy Manning, and their little brother, Jimmy. We spent a large part of the summer playing softball on a pea gravel lot between 31st and 32nd streets.  Sliding into a base on the rough surface did not seem to faze us. John and Dennis were the longest hitters. After one of their long hits broke a pane in a factory building’s window (we counted that as a home run), the factory manager must have complained to the police. A few days later, a squad arrived, and the police officer told us we could no longer play on the lot. We waited for the officer to leave, and we continued the game. The officer never came back. Apparently, he decided to ignore the complaint because we had no other place to play. When we were not playing baseball, we just hung around, but never got into any real trouble. John and Dennis Reed were close friends. So close that John married Dennis’ cousin, Sandy. Tragically, we lost Dennis on April 9, 1968, when he was killed in action in Vietnam at the age of 20. The neighborhood was mostly torn down in the 70’s to make way for an expressway that was never built, and everyone was scattered.

I received a call from a retired co-worker who still lives in Milwaukee informing me of John's passing., I was sadden to hear the news and my condolence to his family. He was a great guy .I met John years ago when we worked together at Milwaukee Valve. He was are electrician. He was awesome at his job. He would help the maintenance men when they were having trouble figuring out what was wrong with the machines they were assigned to repair. He would also help other co-workers outside of work when they were having electrical issues with their house, auto , trailers. I was one of them. We started hanging out after that. He would come up to Castle Rock were I had a trailer and fish and hang out. He had a great sense of humor, always telling jokes or had a comment or wise crack. We would go to Conejitos Mexican Restaurant and get their steak tacos and some beers after a job. He was a regular customer at Conejitos and I remember going to his 50th birthday party there in the backroom right after they built the addition on.. When John decided to leave Milwaukee Valve to take a better job at M.P.S. we still stayed in touch he would have his Sea Ray at Lake Beulah and I would have my Bayliner fish and hang out on the sandbar. John loved his family and his dogs. He would take his dogs everywhere he could they loved the convertible rides and hunting pheasant. John would take them to Currie Park when they lived over there and they would chase skunks and get sprayed and John would have to give them tomato juice baths. I loved it when they went hunting because he would give me the pheasant breast sometimes. I remember him asking me to do him a favor and take care of Lisa"s cat till she moved where she could have it. I did it was a cool cat but if I forgot to put its stick away with the bells and balls on it when I went to bed it would wake me up running around the house at 2 a.m like it was on crack crashing into everything. When the Milwaukee Valve closed the manufacturing in Milwaukee and moved it to the Prairie Du Sac location and I relocated we did not have much contact after that. Rest in peace John I am very thankful and blessed to have know him.. .
Peace of mind is a call away. We’re here when you need us most.
