Died peacefully at Froedtert Hospital in Milwaukee, WI on January 2, 2016 after a short battle with pancreatic cancer. He was born in Kankakee, Illinois on September 11, 1946 to Loran and Viola Havens (nee Francoeur).
During high school, he was a member of the Kankakee Shadows Color Guard. After graduation from Kankakee High School, he served in the Navy from 1964-1967 during the Vietnam War as a sonar technician on the USS Hamner. John earned his degree in Government at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, before attending the police academy. He worked as a Milwaukee Police Officer for nearly 25 years, retiring in 2003. He enjoyed being a member of the Emerald Society, especially volunteering his time to the organization during Irish Fest yearly and was a member of the Aroma Park American Legion Post 1019 in Illinois.
John was known as Johnny, Grandpa John-E, Papa or Scooter among his many countless friends and family. He loved riding his Harley and listening to music, especially Little Feat. His favorite sports teams were Notre Dame, University of Wisconsin and anyone who would beat Florida. From boyhood on he was a fan of the Chicago Bears and the Green Bay Packers. He always enjoyed spending time with his friends and family. He will forever be remembered for his baritone voice and bellowing laugh, his "happy tapping" and his signature phrase, "Far Out."
John is preceded in death by his parents Loran & Viola Havens and his brother Loran "Boo" Havens and many dear family and friends.
He is survived by his wife Susan Havens, daughters Andrea Havens (Benjamin Stocks) & Mary Havens, and stepchildren Marcee Doherty-Elst (Christopher), Stacee Lerret (Brian) and Patrick Doherty III (Natalie), his beloved grandchildren Veronica Havens Stocks and Keegan, Amelia & Nolan Lerret, his "kids" cats Cagnee and Lacee, and brothers David Havens (Sharon), Stephen Havens (Linda), Robert Havens (Nancy) and Daniel Havens (Robin), along with many other family and friends.
Visitation will be held at Krause Funeral Home,9000 West Capitol Drive, Milwaukee, WI on Thursday, January 7th, from 4pm – 6:45pm, with service immediately following at 7pm.
