Janet Loretta Pruitt (Nee Steinhilber) passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, on Saturday, November 16, 2019, at the age of 89. Devoted mother of Karen (John) Thurston, Darrell Pruitt, Renee (Thomas) Leunig, Dale (Chris) Pruitt, Prudence Coffey, Hanks (Katy) Pruitt, Janet (Daniel) Nerad, Tamara Johnson, David Weitzel, Shelly Nordquist and the late Joel “Tim” Bushke. She is survived by 24 grandchildren, 50 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren.
Janet was a dedicated and loving mother who was the pillar of strength for her family. A family that included not only those she bore but, the numerous foster children she eagerly welcomed into her home over the course of 45 years. Her unconditional acceptance, devotion, and compassion have not gone unrecognized. Year after year, she received countless Awards, Certificates of Excellence and Appreciation, and Community Recognitions from the State of Wisconsin, Milwaukee County, Waukesha County, and Community organizations. All recognizing her for her “outstanding service”, “selfless devotion” and “dedicated efforts” to persons with special needs and to State and County Foster Care programs. She was honored as an Outstanding Family of Milwaukee County; received a Jefferson Award for Service to the Community; and, was named Foster Parent of the Year.
Janet enjoyed traveling with her family well into their adult lives. She especially enjoyed camping in State and National Parks across the country with her young family. She also loved attending the many cultural festivals and events, exposing her children to experiences and activities that enriched their lives immeasurably. With her adult children, she continued to take family vacations both here and abroad well into her seventies. She nurtured in her family a love for travel and exploration.
Janet’s amazing spirit will live on in her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren as they promise to honor and treasure her legacy of acceptance, compassion, service to others and commitment to family.
In her decline with dementia, she was cared for with compassion, respect, and dignity by the caring staff of Ellen’s Home Assisted Living and in her final days by Seasons Hospice. The family extends their deepest gratitude.
