Helen Elaine Steward

Age 89, passed away on September 18, 2011, as a result of complications following surgery. Former longtime resident of Mequon, she was born in St. Joseph, Indiana, on January 13, 1922, to Alfred Day Goodwin and Luah M. (Goebel) Goodwin. Beloved wife of the late Fred Steward for 52 years. Dear mother of James (Betty) Steward and Carol (Roy) Masengale. Loving grandmother of Christina (Timothy) Bohnhoff, Brian (Tina) Steward, and Lisa Masengale. Proud great-grandmother of Payton and Addison Steward. Further survived by many nieces and nephews and other family and friends. Preceded in death by her 5 siblings: Marge, David, Carl, Jean and Jack. Helen taught herself to read at age 3, and loved literature, music and art. She was an accomplished pianist and fostered an appreciation for music in her children. She created many paintings, experimenting with various media and techniques, including watercolor, oil, acrylic, mosaic and montage. She also made several original ceramic pieces. She was an active member of Christ Church of Mequon, Wisconsin, and in various community organizations. She was also a member of the Mequon/Thiensville Art League, Daughters of the American Revolution and Colonial Dames. A Gathering will be held at ALEXIAN VILLAGE CHAPEL, 9301 North 76th Street, Milwaukee, Saturday, October 1 from 1:00-2:00 PM. Memorial service at 2:00 PM. A reception with friends and family will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Christ Church of Mequon or the Alexian Village Chapel of Milwaukee.
