Born and raised in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Eileen excelled at academics and particularly languages, learning 5 fluently. She graduated from high school at 15, undergrad at 19 and received her Master's in Foreign Languages from St. Michael's College of the University of Toronto at 21. When she came to Milwaukee to teach at Marquette University in 1948, she was younger than many of her post war students. While at MU, she took an Italian class where she met Joe, her husband of 58 years. She also taught at Cardinal Stritch College. She became a US citizen in 1956.
After raising her 4 children, ever the lifelong learner, Eileen went back to graduate school at UWM and earned her 2nd Master's, this time in Library Science, and made a return to MU as a Foreign Language Cataloger at MU's Memorial Library until her retirement in 1990.
She remained active in retirement, volunteering at the Milwaukee Art Museum's library; attending various cultural events as a season ticket holder to Early Music Now, Milwaukee Symphony, Milwaukee Ballet, Milwaukee Rep, Chamber Theater, and American Players Theater; and traveling to France and Ireland with Joe. She also enjoyed going to Milwaukee Brewers and Marquette Golden Eagles games. She was focused on her family, devoted to her faith, and proud of her Irish-Canadian heritage.
The family wishes to extend their thanks to Dr. James Landisch, Ben Jenkins and Suzanne of Aurora Hospice, and most especially our Visiting Angels Bertha Blackmon and Lisa McBeath for their compassionate care of Eileen during her final years with dementia.
