Carl was born on July 8, 1915 to Ernest Carl and Gertrude Amalia (Koehler) Hoppe. He attended Jerusalem Lutheran School and Boys' Technical High School. Carl was employed at the U.S. Post Office, Milwaukee, before enlisting in the US Coast Guard in 1942. After WWII, he returned to the Postal Service in Milwaukee for a career spanning 42 years.
While stationed in New York City, Carl met and married his first wife, Adeline Catherine (nee Bathgate), in Brooklyn. She predeceased him in 1973.
Carl enjoyed traveling with Gladys, collecting postage stamps and coins, as well as beer cans (and the liquid therein). Carl valued his participation in the "Stars and Stripes Honor Flight" with his son. He loved his faith and his family. In his later life especially, each new experience was "The Best Ever!"
