Alice Hill Nelson, a much-loved wife and mother, artist and friend to many, died very peacefully on June 15, 2024. She was 103 years old and very ready to join her beloved husband of 67 years, James W. Nelson, Jr. She is survived by her five children, Jim Nelson (Sue) of Clearwater, Florida, Georgeanne Cusic (Marshall) of Madison, Wisconsin, Sue Brewster (Glenn) of
Concord, Massachusetts, Karen MacCormick (Alasdair, deceased) of Edinburgh, Scotland, and Marjorie Moon (Scott) of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She was dearly loved by her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren as well.
Born June l, 1921, Alice’s long life drew her through an epic succession of world events and technological advancements. An avid reader and learner, she maintained an active curiosity about the world and all that was new throughout her life. Her deep love of art and the creation of beauty drove her to paint, sculpt, work with clay and knit until late in life she lost her sight. She found so much joy in music and books on all topics, but especially the novels of Anthony Trollope, Jane Austen and Agatha Christie. Alice collected the words of others that she found meaningful; in the last years when beset by physical challenges, she found strength in Virgil’s advice: “Endure, and save yourself for happier times.” Even in those last years, she was quick to find humor and her laughter was a delight.
The Nelson family would like to express a very heartfelt thank you to the caring people at both Holding Hands Homecare and Lakewood Assisted Living in Brookfield, WI.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
