Michelle “Shelly” Baumunk, {February 19, 1969– January 29, 2023}
My heart is broken as my family and I mourn the loss of my beloved, little sister, Michelle. Her bright light and big heart left us too soon, but we will remember her warmth, love, and energy.
Michelle was a warrior her entire life as she was mentally and physically challenged from a very young age. She could never speak more than a few words, but “Elmo” seemed to be the one she could always verbalize and understand; Elmo brought her joy. Living in another state was challenging on our family, but the calls and video chats kept us close.
I will miss my sister, as will those she impacted throughout her life, from friends and family to the staff that became her family at Michelle House.
Our father, Victor passed in 2005 and our mother, Karen in 2010. The last time I visited my sister, my daughter Sofia and I were on a road trip to Lambeau Field. We stopped in for a visit and basked in her laughter, infectious joy and clapping hands. My last words to her were ones of reassurance, that it was ok to leave, and that mom and dad were waiting for her. I know she really wanted to be with them. Shelly’s life was difficult, and her death was sudden, but I believe in the last moments of her life, she knew that as a sister and aunt, she was loved.
Shelly, I wish I could have made you laugh one more time. I needed you, too.
Love your brother, Brian.
Thank you to all of the amazing people and caregivers that helped in Shelly’s care for so many years at Madison Central Colony, Bethesda Luther Home, and Michelle House.
Michelle is survived by her brother, Brian Baumunk along with his wife, Sandra and daughters, Mia and Sofia Baumunk. Michelle is also survived by her grandmother, Marian Polzin.
