To Jan's beloved family, I had the pleasure of learning with and from Jan as a colleague at Cardinal Stritch University. She was a bright scholar and teacher who was well known for holding the highest academic standards while still showing the deepest compassion for each student as an individual. It was the Chicago in her for sure! She was so knowledgeable about literacy development, especially reading comprehension for adolescents. So much of what I know and teach and do today is because of what I learned from Jan. She always talked about her family - how much she loved each of you and how much she enjoyed watching her kids grow into their own talents and uniqueness as adults. I will always remember times that she'd invite me over to the house for a "work session" on course revision, etc, but we'd spend hours talking about her family. She really adored you all. She will be greatly missed. She was a very special colleague and friend. Warmly, Rhonda Schoonover

Bill, Amanda, and John, I was fortunate to have an office next to Jan’s at Cardinal Stritch University. Thus, I got to know her beyond the context of faculty meetings and university business. Our conversations were wide-ranging, including discussions of research, university expectations, and our families, most frequently punctuated by laughter. Jan’s impact on her colleagues and students was deep. Her memory will be honored for some time. My deepest sympathy to you all.

To Jan’s cherished family, Jan spoke often of each of you with deep love and gratefulness in our conversations over the 19 years that I was extremely fortunate to be her colleague and friend at Cardinal Stritch. She was extremely proud of her children’s talents and adventurous independence. She always described Bill as a completely dedicated and selfless husband. She could not have been a more welcoming and generous faculty mentor. Her absolute academic integrity and scholarship depth set a standard for colleagues and students alike. She will be held in great respect and affection in our memories and through her many contributions to the field of literacy. With my deepest sympathy, Molly Shiffler

Please accept my condolences at this difficult time. Jan was an inspiration to me and so many others. She was one of my professors at Stritch, my action research advisor, and my friend. Please accept my sincere condolences on your loss. Dr. Strop was a very special person in my life. She was my advisor, teacher, and friend. Her advise and encouragement helped me get through the program at Cardinal Stritch. The lunches at your house where we shared laughs and discussed my research are among my fondest memories of the long process of writing my dissertation. She was a kind, caring woman with a passion for learning and research. She is such an important part of who I am today.

Bill, Mandy and John, please accept my sincere condolences on your loss. Jan was a very special person in my life for the last 25 years. I had the privilege to go through the doctoral program at UW-Madison and work at Cardinal Stritch with Jan. Jan was a true scholar who had a thirst for learning. She inspired me, our colleagues and students at Stritch to always dig deeper, read more, and think harder. She was a leader in our Literacy Department and was the catalyst for the Language and Literacy doctoral program. So much of the scholar and leader I am today is because of my friendship with Jan. Thank you for sharing her with so many over the years. She made a significant impact on the field of education. Personally, I treasure the opportunity I had to call Jan my friend.
