Hans Felix Lux was born to life on February 5, 1930 to Felix and Maria (nee Lerch) Lux in Neunkirchen, Saar, Germany. Hans spent his formative years in various cities including Strasburg, Mainz, Koblenz, Ravensburg, and St. Wendel. He served as a bike messenger during the war, and was a volunteer for the Red Cross, where he met his future wife Emmi.
Hans came to the United States in 1951 and lived with his Uncle Joe in Milwaukee, working for Park Electric perfecting his trade as an electrician and repairing machine equipment. Hans took great pride in his work. He spent the remainder of his work life working for Melius Electric, A.C. Frodermann Electric, and DNESCO until his retirement in 1992. On September 2, 2021 Hans was recognized by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) for 65 years of membership, although Hans was not able to attend in person.
In June 1953, Emmi arrived in Milwaukee and Hans and Emmi were married on Emmi’s 21st birthday. This started the tradition of Hans giving Emmi 21 red roses each year on their anniversary.
In September 1953, while not yet a citizen, Hans was drafted into the United States Army where he served in Korea in the Signal Corps. He became a U.S. Citizen in New Brunswick, Georgia in 1954. He continued to serve his country in the Army Reserves until his discharge in 1961.
In 1955, Hans returned to Emmi and their life in Milwaukee. Their marriage was blessed with three children: Hans Jr, Susan, and Jeffrey as well as eleven grandchildren: Kirsten, Brandon, David, Bryn, Kyra, Rylee, Hayden, Joseph, Wendy, Evan, and Zachary. Hans loved his family and took great pride in his children and grandchildren. “Opa” was one of his favorite words.
Hans loved his God and faithfully served Gloria Dei Bethesda (now Abiding Word) as Elder, Usher, and leader for the Pioneer Program. He set an example of faithful worship and serving his Lord. He was also proud of his German heritage and in 1964 Hans and Emmi joined the German Mardi Gras Society – K.G. Rheinischer Verein. Hans served on the Board for many years and as a member of the Prinzengarde. Hans was ‘Prinz Karneval’ twice, first in 1974 where he chose his song “Schnaps, das war sein letztes Wort, dann trugen ihn die Englein fort! (Schnaps was his last word, then the angels carried him away). He reigned as Prinz Felix with Emmi in 2005, sharing this time and heritage with not only their children, but also their grandchildren.
Hans’ commitment to German culture and heritage was also evidenced by his participation in German Fest where he served as a director since its inception in 1981, responsible for the electric and the grounds.
Hans loved life and lived it to the fullest. He was called to his eternal rest on Saturday September 11, 2021 at the age of 91 years, seven months, and 6 days. He was preceded into death by his parents, Felix and Maria Lux, his sister Marianne Lux, and granddaughter, Wendy Lux.
Hans is survived by his wife of 68 years, Emmi, children: Hans (Beth), Susan, and Jeffrey, as well as grandchildren: Kirsten, Brandon, David, Bryn (Stephen), Kyra, Rylee, Hayden, Joseph, Evan, Zachary, and many wonderful friends.
