Age 87, passed away in her sleep on Tuesday, February 23, 2010, following a heart attack on December 30, 2009. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, Peter Hilger and Helen (Jaeger) Hilger, and her dear friend and business partner, Kittie Skelton. Shirley is survived by close friends Brian Tarro, Juanita Newman, Ruth Sells and Kent Tess-Mattner, and by the entire Carroll College (now Carroll University) community, including thousands of students she recruited to Carroll over the years.Shirley graduated from Carroll College in 1943, worked 33 years in Admissions at Carroll, and retired in 1984 as Director of Admissions Emeritus. In 1990, she received Carroll's Distinguished Alumni Award, and in 1994 she received from Carroll an Honorary Doctorate in Humane Letters. She was proud of the accomplishments of those she recruited to Carroll, especially those who became "big shots".For over 40 years, she and Kittie Skelton owned and managed Waterfront Log Cabins Resort in Door County, and she will be fondly remembered by the many renters and neighbors, who became friends.Special thanks to the staff of the Courtyards at Luther Manor, especially Kristy, Chris, Rose, and Mark, where Shirley lived since 2003, and to the hospice staff and regular staff at the Second Floor Home at Luther Manor. There will be a service to celebrate Shirley's life at 10:30 AM on Saturday, March 27, 2010, followed by lunch, in the Humphrey Memorial Chapel at Carroll University. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the Shirley E. Hilger Endowed Scholarship at Carroll University or to the Carroll Fund at Carroll University.
