Grandmother of Gregory Hutton, Angela Howard, Brian (Mary) Howard, Jeffrey (Angela) Howard, Paul Feyertag, Sierra Feyertag, Nicholas (Sarah) Tetzlaff, Abigail Hanna, Natalie (Mike) Schwobe, Joseph Cannestra, Benedetta Cannestra, Beau Blend and Bashir Fotouhi. Further survived by her great-grandchildren; her sister-in-law, Beverly Polzin; and many other relatives and friends. Preceded in death by her husband, Robert W. Howard, Sr; and son, Robert Howard, Jr. and an infant son; her parents, Rose and Henry Polzin; and step-mother, Lucille Polzin. Also preceded in death by her sister, Verna Arbeiter; brother, Arnold Polzin; and her in-laws, Jean and Bill Brown and Thelma and Art Dignin.
Shirley’s first job after high school was working at a Savings & Loan Company, where she received several certificates. She was a stay-at-home mom for many years while her family was growing. It was not unusual to have other family or friends join us for meals. She was a second mom for many of our cousins and friends. She worked odd jobs, part-time at the Cheese Guild and Auggie’s Pizza in the evenings. After all her children were school age, she became the materials management clerk at Inland Steel, where she worked for many years.
Shirley received many awards and accommodations over her lifetime, including an award from the West Allis Fire Department for saving eight children from a house fire. She was extremely active in the Badger Kart Club, spending many Sundays going to Dousman, for over 65 years. During that time, she worked registration, scoring, the concession stand, and became a lifetime member of the board of directors. Her many awards included the President’s Award, Jim Clark Memorial Award and induction into the World Karting Hall of Fame.
Shirley enjoyed vacations with her family, traveling frequently to South Carolina, to the Pink Shell Resort in Florida, and other destinations included Italy, England and “up north”. While she travelled to many locations, she never had a driver’s license and was a master at making sure she had transportation to wherever she needed to go. In her spare time, Shirley loved to bake, playing cards and dominos with her lady friends, and enjoyed time with her family.
Visitation will be held from 2:00 PM – 4:45 PM on Monday, September 30, 2024 at Krause Funeral Home, 12401 West National Avenue in New Berlin. Time of Remembrance at 5:00 PM.
Memorials can be made to the Badger Kart Club, Howard Memorial Scholarship Fund.
