Richard D. “Dick” Riebel, age 76, passed away peacefully at home in Brookfield, Wisconsin on Sunday, October 27, surrounded by family. Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, and raised in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Dick was the eldest of eight children of Richard E. and Audrey Riebel. He is predeceased by his sister, Marie Elizabeth Riebel.
Dick is survived by Kandace, his beloved wife of 29 years; his sons, Karl (Anneliese), Tony (Katie), Alex Anguil (Caitlin), Chris Anguil (Maddie), and his daughter, Leah Keating (Mark). He leaves behind his siblings: Patricia Cassidy, David (Sharon), Frederick, William, Robert (Kelly), and Timothy, as well as ten cherished grandchildren.
After graduating from Grand Rapids High School in 1966, Dick was drafted into the Army, later transitioning to the National Guard, where he served for five years. He was a proud graduate of Marquette University, earning both his undergraduate degree in 1970 and his law degree in 1974. For 40 years, he practiced corporate law as a partner at Godfrey, Braun and Frazier, representing small businesses with unwavering dedication and care.
Dick had a passion for photography, serving as president of the board of directors at the Milwaukee Center for Photography for a decade. His love for travel with Kandace and family provided him with endless opportunities to capture both beautiful images and memorable moments, which he proudly displayed at home or on exhibit. He was also an avid collector of black and white photographs by many of the world’s most well known historical photographers.
As a passionate sailor and skier, Dick explored all The Great Lakes and enjoyed many memorable seaside and mountainside trips throughout his life. Dick loved exploring world travel but cherished simple vacations with family, particularly when shopping for a new Panama hat or relaxing with a good book and a particularly nice glass of red wine. He was a voracious reader who delighted in recommending and discussing books with friends and family.
As a dedicated sportsman, Dick was a long-standing member of Blue Mound Golf & Country Club and Western Racquet Club. His enthusiasm for tennis and golf evolved into a more recent passion for the game of pickleball. His love of music, spanning all genres, was something he held dear, believing it to be a deeply spiritual part of life. Known for his generous spirit, Dick contributed to numerous causes throughout his life. He loved engaging in thoughtful conversation and was always eager to share ideas and lead a spirited discussion.
Richard D. Riebel will be deeply missed by his family and friends, leaving behind a legacy of love, adventure, and kindness, together with some truly amazing photographs.
“Each photograph is a testament to existence, a reminder that in life and death, every moment counts.”
