Richard A. Giesen (Rich) died January 13, 2015 at the age of 85. Beloved, beloved man who could repair anything, except a microwave oven, so that it worked better than before. Expert raconteur and joke-teller, though some would contest how good the jokes actually were. Possessed of a gorgeous tenor voice that graced weddings, concerts, community theater and even street corners as a child. Adored by all small children and dogs, but definitely not cats. That feeling was mutual.
He was perfectionist who held himself to the highest standards, but had patience and compassion for the human failings of others. He never preached, but certainly practiced, kindness, acceptance, decency, loyalty, graciousness and faith. His council was always measured, loving and wise, and we are afraid of living in the world without it. His courage and fortitude were demonstrated, repeatedly, during his final days.
Upon retirement, he threw himself with enthusiasm into volunteering work which included over a decade of serving as a surrogate grandfather to numerous semesters of Nature Preschool students at the Schlitz Audubon Nature Center, hiking, singing, laughing and stirring soup. He was never afraid to be silly, and for that, all are grateful. He was also dedicated to the Raptor Education program and during the 15 years that he volunteered there, the list of creatures that adored him grew to include numerous hawks and one very special great horned owl. That feeling was also mutual.
Survived by the love of his life, Lorraine, who he met in high school and with whom he had recently celebrated 63 years of marriage, his son Larry (Denise,) his daughters Tammi (Andy Oliver) and Nancy, his grandchildren Allyson Giesen and Benno, Ronin, Sawyer and Justus TwoFeathers and his sister Elizabeth Jenkins. He was preceded in death by his son Steve and his cherished dog Jake.
