Maurleen enjoyed growing up on a farm in Stockholm, SD with her parents and two brothers. She was born with a hole in her heart, but that never dampened her spirits. She married her first love, John, in 1951 and followed him in his career as a Postal Inspector throughout the Midwest.
A critical point in her life came at age 32, when she became one of the first patients in the world to receive a (then-experimental) Teflon patch to repair her heart. Maurleen counted each year after her surgery as a "bonus year" – years she would not have enjoyed without the surgery. There were to be more than 50 bonus years in total. In those years she saw both her children get married, gained two grandchildren, and in 2014, a great-grandson.
Maurleen will be remembered for her friendliness, kindness and sense of humor. She stayed busy gardening, bird watching, quilting, baking and spending time with family, friends and her loyal cat, Walter. But no matter what she was doing, she always paused at 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. for cookie time, a tradition that is now carried on by her grandchildren.
The family thanks the caring people at Heritage Homes and Rainbow Hospice Care for the excellent care they provided. Their compassion, dedication and patience is deeply appreciated by all.
In lieu in flowers, memorials to Cross of Life Lutheran Church or Rainbow Hospice Care.
