Marty passed away unexpectedly after a brief illness on April 22, 2025 at age 74. Loving husband of Kathy (nee Behlke). Devoted father of Jacob. Beloved son of Dolores and the late Richard Eggener. Dear brother of Sharon (Frank) Boerner, Kim (Janice), Brian, Richelle (Jon) Snyder, and the late James (the late Margaret).
Born in Memoninee, MI, Marty attended Sacred Heart Grade School, then graduated from Catholic Central High School in Marinette, WI, in 1969. A Vietnam veteran, he enlisted in the Army and served from 1970-73. In his youth he traveled to Mexico, Guatemala and Brazil.
He graduated from UW-Stevens Point in 1975 with a BS in Political Science and afterwards obtained a Masters in Public Policy and Administration from UW-Madison. He held several positions with non-profit organizations including the Wisconsin Rural Housing Cooperative. During this time he completed his teaching certificate as well.
On August 14, 1982, he married Kathy (Behlke) Eggener on an island on Big Lake, within the Cisco Chain of Lakes in Goegebic County, MI. His son Jacob was born in Madison, WI in 1983. In 1985 Marty and family moved to West Allis, WI. Marty taught in Milwaukee for several years at St. Adalbert’s High School, as well as at St. Mary’s Academy High School. He obtained his educational administrator license while often acting as a caretaker for his beloved son Jacob.
Between furthering his education and supporting Kathy in her nursing career, Marty encouraged Jacob’s pursuits in music, swimming, and a brief stint with the Boy Scouts. Summers (and many weekends) were spent in Marinette, with yearly vacations to Copper Harbor, MI. Other travels included visiting family in Arkansas, travels to Land O’Lakes and a special father-son trip to lower Michigan. Marty also spent many years deer hunting with his close friends at “The Shack” in Peshtigo.
Returning to education, Marty joined the Racine school district as an assistant principal at Starbuck Middle School. Afterwards he held administrative positions in the West Allis school district at Frank Lloyd Wright Middle School, Hale and Central High Schools, as well as Jefferson Elementary School before his retirement in 2009.
In his retirement, Marty split his time between Milwaukee and his cottage on Green Bay in the Town of Peshtigo. He was a licensed Amateur Radio Operator (callsign KB9NNW), a member of the Marinette Historical Society, and a member of the Northern Lights Master Gardener Association.
Quick with a joke and always with a story to tell, the self-styled “Mayor of Shore Drive” was a friend, mentor and confidant to many; always giving of himself. Marty’s commitment to his wife, son and family was boundless, and his memory will endure for years to come.
Visitation at Krause Funeral Home, 12401 West National Avenue, New Berlin, Wisconsin on Saturday, May 10, 2025 from 11:00 AM – 1:45 PM. Funeral Service at 2:00 PM. Private burial.
