Mable Clair Prather King “Mimi” was born on August 15, 1932, in Selmer (McNairy County), Tennessee, to the union of the late Argie Deen Prather Sr. and Doris Mildred Moore Prather. She departed this life on April 3, 2026, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, at the age of 93 years, 7 months, and 19 days.
Mable professed Christ as her Savior at an early age and attended Roach Chapel United Methodist Church in Selmer, Tennessee. She later joined St. Mark A.M.E. Church in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
She was educated in Selmer, Tennessee, and graduated from McNairy County High School in 1950. Soon after, she married Hubert King, and their union was blessed with three sons: Ernest Deen King, Don Quienten King, and Anthony Alan King.
In May of 1956, Mable and Hubert divorced, and she raised her sons with the support of her family and friends.
In 1958, Mable began her undergraduate studies at Lane College in Jackson, Tennessee. In the spring of 1960, she became a member of the illustrious Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. She graduated from Lane College on May 27, 1962, earning a Bachelor’s degree in education.
On September 6, 1966, Mable accepted a teaching position with Milwaukee Public Schools at West Division High School. She taught Business Education and served as the girls’ basketball coach, leading her team to state championships. Mable later continued her career at Hamilton High School, from which she retired in 1994.
Mable was devoted to her community and performed countless acts of service. She was an active member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated; Top Ladies of Distinction, Incorporated – Milwaukee Chapter; served as President of Habitat for Humanity (McNairy County); and participated in many other organizations.
Mable was affectionately crowned “Mimi” by her first-born grandson, Jason Lamar King, and was lovingly called Mimi by all her grandchildren, family, and friends.
She leaves to cherish her memory: her son, Ernest D. King of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; her grandchildren, Andrea King of Detroit, Michigan; Nawasa (Damon) Robinson of Sterling Heights, Michigan; Isabella Espinoza King of Madison, Wisconsin; Jamal (Heathyr) King of Las Vegas, Nevada; Mabel Clara (Derrick Sr.) Planter of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Eva King of Madison, Wisconsin; and Alexander Jovian King of Waukesha, Wisconsin. She was also blessed with many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren who will carry on her legacy.
She is further survived by her sisters-in-love, Joann Bankhead, Lavern Smith, and Ella Fowler; daughters-in-love, Pricila Espinoza, Patricia Morris, and Cassaundra McGee; godsons, Brian and Greg Mitchell; and a host of relatives and friends who mourn her passing.
Mable was preceded in death by her parents, Argie and Doris Prather; her siblings, Argie Prather Jr., Joe Prather, and Sophie Sue Prather; her sons, Don Q. King and Anthony A. King; and her grandson, Jason L. King.
Visitation will be held at Krause Funeral Home, 9000 West Capitol Drive, Milwaukee, WI 53222, on Monday, April 20, 2026, 3:00 – 6:00 PM. Additional visitation will be held at Krause Funeral Home, on Tuesday, April 21, 2026 from 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM. Service at 11:00 AM. Procession to Graceland to follow.
